Lohardaga is rich in bauxite deposits, with several organizations, notably Hindalco, operating bauxite mines in the vicinity. The extracted bauxite from these mines is transported to alumina refineries across various states of India for processing.

The district spans an area of 1,502 square kilometers and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of approximately 461,000 people. The predominant language spoken in the area is Hindi.

In terms of political landscape, the 2019 assembly election results saw Rameshwar Oraon of the Indian National Congress winning the seat with 74,380 votes, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Partys Sukhdeo Bhagat, who secured 44,230 votes, and AJSUs Neeru Shanti Bhagat, who received 39,916 votes.

In the 2015 assembly by-elections, Sukhdeo Bhagat of the Indian National Congress emerged victorious with 73,859 votes. He was followed by AJSUs Neeru Shanti Bhagat with 50,571 votes and JVM(P)s Bandhu Tirkey, who garnered 16,951 votes.
