'This is fake hair': Honey Singh

During an appearance on the ABtalks podcast, Singh reflected on how his mental health struggles began at the peak of his career, while juggling a music reality show in Mumbai and an international tour with Shah Rukh Khan.

Recalling the onset of his condition, the Payal singer said he was overwhelmed by fear and paranoia during the tour. The 43-year-old revealed that the anxiety became so intense that he shaved half his head in an attempt to skip a performance. “They told me they would make me wear a cap. People were not understanding what I was going through,” he said.

Singh said he eventually left the tour midway after performing two songs and withdrew completely from public life. “I stayed inside my house for seven years. I didn’t want my fans to see me in that condition,” he shared.

He also revealed how prolonged medication affected him physically. “I became 105 kilos because of it, and I lost my hair completely. This is fake hair; I am totally bald. This is a wig,” he said.

Honey Singh on the darkest phase

Describing the severity of the phase, Honey Singh said there was a period when he barely stepped out of his bedroom. He added that he avoided meeting even close friends and cut himself off from television, phone calls and the internet.

The singer-rapper also spoke about experiencing delusional thoughts during his illness. “In 2018 and 2019, I believed that I was already dead,” he said, adding that he often felt trapped “between heaven and hell”.

The Brown Rang singer credited a change in treatment and medication for helping him recover after years of little progress. According to the singer, he began noticing improvements within weeks of consulting a new doctor and adjusting his medicines.

Looking back at the period, Honey Singh said the effects of substance abuse continued long after he quit drugs in 2014. He added that recovery was slow and exhausting, but he now feels grateful to have regained stability and returned to work.

Yo Yo Honey Singh had previously opened up about his struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction in the documentary Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous, which premiered on Netflix. Since then, the singer has returned to touring and music with projects including Honey Singh 3.0, Glory and 51 Glorious Days, alongside his ongoing My Story World Tour.
