If there is one mango variety that rules Indian summers, it is the Alphonso mango. Known as the “king of mangoes”, Alphonso mangoes are loved for their rich sweetness, creamy saffron-coloured pulp and strong aroma. The most famous Alphonso mangoes come from the Konkan region of Maharashtra, especially Ratnagiri and Devgad.

These coastal districts produce premium-quality Hapus mangoes that are exported across India and abroad every year.

From unique weather conditions to laterite soil and traditional farming methods, several factors make Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes stand out from the rest.

WHY KONKAN IS FAMOUS FOR ALPHONSO MANGOES

The Konkan coast lies between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. It stretches across parts of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. However, Ratnagiri and Devgad in Maharashtra are considered the heartland of authentic Alphonso mangoes.

The humid coastal weather and mineral-rich laterite soil help the fruit develop its signature sweetness, fragrance and smooth texture. Farmers in the region also follow traditional grafting methods that have been passed down through generations.

Locally, Alphonso mangoes are called Hapus mangoes.

WHAT MAKES RATNAGIRI ALPHONSO SPECIAL

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mangoes have received a GI (Geographical Indication) tag. This tag confirms the authenticity and quality of mangoes grown in these regions.

These mangoes are known for:

  • Creamy, fibre-free pulp
  • Rich sweet taste
  • Bright saffron-coloured flesh
  • Strong natural aroma
  • Naturally ripened fruit

The GI tag also helps buyers identify genuine Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mangoes in the market.

WHICH STATES GROW ALPHONSO MANGOES?

Maharashtra is India’s largest and most famous producer of Alphonso mangoes. Apart from Ratnagiri and Devgad, Alphonso mangoes are also grown in:

  • Goa
  • Karnataka
  • Gujarat, especially Valsad and Navsari
  • Andhra Pradesh on a smaller scale

Still, mango lovers often prefer Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso because of their taste and quality.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ALPHONSO MANGOES

The Alphonso mango is believed to be named after Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque. Historical records suggest the first Alphonso mango tree was planted in Vengurla in the early 1500s.

The mango season usually runs from March to June. A single Alphonso mango generally weighs between 180 and 260 grams.

Because of their premium quality and limited seasonal availability, Alphonso mangoes are among the most expensive mango varieties in the world.

From their rich flavour to their GI-certified quality, Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mangoes continue to remain the gold standard for mango lovers across the globe.
