Two abandoned suitcases lying along the banks of the Durgavati river in Bihar’s Kaimur district led to a chilling discovery on Sunday, when locals opened them to find mutilated human remains inside, triggering panic and a large-scale police investigation.

The incident came to light in the Ramgarh police station area near Chaurasia bridge, where villagers noticed a strong foul smell emanating from two unattended suitcases. Suspicious, they alerted others and checked the bags, only to discover dismembered human body parts packed inside.

Eyewitnesses and local representatives described the scene as extremely disturbing, with body parts allegedly chopped into pieces and stuffed into suitcases.

Preliminary suspicion suggests that the victims may include a child and an adult, although officials have not yet confirmed the number or identities of the deceased.

Kaimur Superintendent of Police Harmohan Shukla said police were alerted after reports that some body parts were seen floating in the Durgavati river. “Our forensic and photography teams reached the spot immediately and began a detailed investigation. Two suitcases have been recovered containing various human body parts, including limbs and torso. The remains are in a highly decomposed state,” he said.

Police suspect the murders may have taken place elsewhere, with the bodies later dumped at the riverbank to destroy evidence and mislead investigators. So far, no missing persons complaint matching the case has been registered in the district.

Authorities have informed neighbouring districts and police stations to help identify the victims. The recovered remains have been sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic analysis is underway to determine the exact time of death, number of victims, and other crucial details.

Officials said all angles, including possible links to organised crime, are being examined. Further details are expected once forensic reports are received and identification is established.
