Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi underwent a routine medical check-up at a private hospital in Gurugram on Wednesday and has since returned home, the party said, clarifying earlier reports that suggested she had been admitted for a minor surgical procedure.

“Smt Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the CPP, had a routine medical check-up and is now back home,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a brief statement.

The 79-year-old Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan has faced several health-related issues in recent years and has undergone treatment multiple times at hospitals in Delhi and elsewhere. In March this year, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after she complained of uneasiness. Her children, Lok Sabha MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were also present at the hospital during her stay.

Earlier in January, she was hospitalised due to respiratory discomfort. Doctors had then attributed her condition to a mild aggravation of bronchial asthma caused by Delhi’s winter conditions and rising pollution levels.

Throughout 2025, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to hospital on at least three occasions, including for stomach-related ailments and routine medical check-ups in Shimla and Delhi.

A five-time Lok Sabha MP before moving to the Rajya Sabha, Sonia Gandhi has been one of the Congress party’s most influential leaders for over two decades. She has also served two terms as Congress president and continues to play a key role in the party’s organisational and political affairs.
