Constitutional amendment bill for women quota defeated in Lok Sabha

A constitutional amendment bill concerning women's reservation has been defeated in the Lok Sabha after failing to secure the required two-thirds majority. Following the reading of rules by Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh, the division of votes revealed that out of 489 voting members, 278 supported the legislation and 211 opposed it, with zero abstentions. The government fell short of the 360 votes needed to pass the amendment. The defeat follows strong resistance from opposition parties, who cited a deep trust deficit with the treasury benches.
