RG Kar case: Court orders CBI to form SIT to probe evidence tampering allegations

The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to form a three-member Special Investigation Team to probe allegations of evidence tampering in the RG Kar doctor assault and murder case. Headed by a joint director, the team is mandated to submit its findings to the court by the twenty-fifth of June. This development follows a petition by the victim's parents, who expressed dissatisfaction with the initial investigation that resulted in the life imprisonment of the main accused. The court has instructed the agency to examine the sequence of events from the victim's dinner on the fateful night until her cremation. Furthermore, a separate petition filed in the Sealdah Court seeks action against a former Trinamool Congress legislator. The petition alleges that the politician was at the helm of affairs during a hurriedly conducted cremation process, raising suspicions that it was done to tamper with crucial evidence. The high court has asked the agency to re-examine these specific charges.
