Tatkal booking gets AI boost: What train passengers must know
Indian Railways and IRCTC have rolled out an AI-based ticketing and scheduling upgrade ahead of the summer rush. The changes are meant to curb bot-driven Tatkal bookings, ease waiting lists and add flexibility for passengers.

As summer vacations begin across India, millions of passengers are once again preparing for the yearly struggle of booking train tickets. For middle-class families living in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, travelling back home during holidays often comes with one major headache: the waiting list.
For years, Tatkal booking has felt nearly impossible for ordinary passengers. By the time users entered captcha codes or passenger details, tickets often disappeared within seconds. Many travellers believed that automated bots and ticketing agents were grabbing seats before regular users even had a chance.

Now, Indian Railways and IRCTC have introduced a major AI-powered upgrade aimed at tackling these problems. Along with this, Railways has announced 908 summer special trains with over 18,000 trips for the peak holiday season.
Here’s a detailed look at everything changing in the Indian Railways ticketing system this summer.
WHAT IS THE NEW AI-BASED RAILWAY TICKETING SYSTEM?
Indian Railways has launched a new “Citizen-First Rail Ticketing and AI Scheduling” upgrade across the country starting May 2026.
The new system includes:
AI-powered fraud detection
Real-time waiting list optimisation
Anti-bot booking protection
Intelligent train scheduling analysis
According to Railways, the goal is to stop ticket black marketing and improve ticket access for genuine passengers.
HOW THE AI FRAUD DETECTION SYSTEM WORKS
The new AI system is designed to identify suspicious booking behaviour instantly.
Railways says the AI can detect:
Extremely fast typing patterns
Automated passenger entry tools
Bot-like behaviour during Tatkal booking
Multiple bookings from a single IP address
Abnormally quick payment processing
For example, if a user fills passenger details unrealistically fast and reaches the payment page within seconds, the system may identify it as bot activity.
Such accounts or sessions may be blocked immediately.
WHY TATKAL BOOKINGS WERE SO DIFFICULT EARLIER
Tatkal booking has long been one of the most stressful experiences for Indian railway passengers.
Passengers often complained that:
IRCTC servers slowed down during peak hours
Tickets disappeared within seconds
Agents used illegal software and scripts
Bots booked seats faster than humans
This created frustration among regular travellers trying to secure confirmed tickets.
AADHAAR LINKING AND OTP VERIFICATION NOW CRUCIAL
Railways has tightened security rules for Tatkal booking.
Passengers are now strongly encouraged to:
Link Aadhaar with IRCTC accounts
Complete OTP verification
Use fully verified profiles
According to officials, verified accounts will have smoother access during booking.
This move is expected to reduce fake accounts and bulk ticket fraud.
TATKAL TIMINGS REMAIN THE SAME
Tatkal booking timings continue as:
10 am for AC classes
11 am for sleeper and non-AC classes
However, the new anti-bot AI protection is now expected to monitor suspicious booking activity in real time.
908 SUMMER SPECIAL TRAINS ANNOUNCED
To handle heavy passenger demand, Indian Railways has announced:
908 summer special trains
18,262 total train trips
These trains will operate between April 15 and July 15, 2026.
The move aims to reduce waiting lists and overcrowding during peak summer travel.
ROUTES EXPECTED TO BENEFIT MOST
Experts believe the biggest relief may come on heavily crowded routes such as:
Delhi to Patna
Mumbai to Varanasi
Bengaluru to Gorakhpur
Ahmedabad to Darbhanga
These routes often witness waiting lists crossing 400 passengers during holidays.
AI WILL ALSO MONITOR WAITING LISTS
The new AI scheduling model will also analyse:
High-demand routes
Waiting list growth
Coach occupancy
Passenger traffic patterns
If demand rises sharply on certain routes, the AI may alert railway authorities to:
Add extra coaches
Increase train frequency
Schedule additional trips
NEW BOARDING STATION RULES OFFER MORE FLEXIBILITY
Indian Railways has also changed boarding station rules.
Passengers can now change their boarding station online up to 30 minutes before train departure in many cases.
This helps travellers who:
Get delayed in traffic
Miss boarding from original stations
Prefer boarding from nearby stations later
Earlier, missing the original boarding station could result in seat reassignment.
REFUND RULES HAVE ALSO CHANGED
Railways says refund processing has become faster and more passenger-friendly.
Under the updated system:
Early cancellations may receive quicker refunds
Digital payments speed up refund transfers
Vacant seats may reflect faster online
Chart preparation has become more dynamic
Previously, refunds sometimes took several working days.
Now, many refunds may process within hours through updated digital payment systems.
WHAT EXPERTS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE NEW RULES
Railway experts and consumer rights activists believe the AI upgrade could significantly change the train booking experience for passengers.
Ashok Kumar Singh, senior railway analyst and former railway officer, described the move as a revolutionary step for Indian Railways.
According to him, IRCTC is already one of the world’s largest ticketing platforms and experiences massive traffic during peak booking hours. He believes AI scheduling and fraud detection may help stop agents using illegal scripts and extensions to secure Tatkal tickets unfairly.
He also said that if the AI system successfully blocks even 90 per cent of ticketing bots, the chances of ordinary passengers getting confirmed seats could improve significantly.
However, Singh also warned that Railways must improve server capacity to prevent website crashes during OTP verification and heavy booking traffic.
Meanwhile, Consumer Forum activist and Rail Yatri Suvidha Samiti member Harsh Pawar welcomed the consumer-friendly changes, especially the updated boarding station rule allowing modifications up to 30 minutes before departure.
At the same time, he highlighted concerns about digital accessibility.
According to Pawar
Many rural passengers are still unfamiliar with smartphones
OTP verification can become difficult for some users
Aadhaar linking may confuse less tech-savvy travellers
Strict digital rules should not disadvantage passengers booking from counters
He stressed that Railways must ensure technology upgrades remain inclusive for all sections of society.
PROS AND CONS OF THE NEW AI-BASED TATKAL SYSTEM
| PROS | CONS |
|---|---|
| AI may reduce illegal bot bookings | OTP and Aadhaar verification may confuse some users |
| Better chances of getting confirmed tickets | IRCTC servers may still face overload |
| 908 special trains may reduce waiting lists | Some special trains may have higher ticket prices |
| Fake accounts and bulk bookings may reduce | Rural passengers may face digital challenges |
| Faster refunds improve passenger convenience | Technical glitches can still happen |
| Flexible boarding station changes help travellers | Peak-time traffic may still slow the app |
HOW PASSENGERS CAN IMPROVE THEIR CHANCES OF GETTING CONFIRMED TICKETS
Experts recommend these important steps:
Link aadhaar before booking
Verified profiles may face fewer security interruptions.
Create an irctc master list
Save passenger names and details beforehand to save time during booking.
Use faster payment methods
UPI and IRCTC Wallet are generally faster than entering card details manually.
Check summer special trains
Seat availability may be better on special trains compared to regular routes.
Login before tatkal window opens
Being prepared before 10 am or 11 am can save valuable seconds.
WHAT COULD CHANGE NEXT?
According to reports, Railways may introduce even more AI-based features in future, including:
Dynamic coach allocation
Predictive seat confirmation alerts
AI-based travel planning suggestions
Automated capacity management
The future system may even analyse travel patterns and predict confirmation chances in advance.
WILL THIS FINALLY END TICKET BLACK MARKETING?
The Railways’ new AI system is being viewed as one of the biggest technological changes in Indian train booking in recent years.
While it may not completely eliminate booking problems overnight, the move could reduce bot-driven fraud, improve transparency and increase fair access for ordinary passengers.
For millions of Indians travelling during summer vacations, the real test will happen during peak holiday rush when every second matters while booking a train ticket.
