Yearender: 2014 year of women-centric films in Bollywood

2014 was like a breath of fresh air for otherwise male-dominated Hindi film industry. There were many films this year revolving around female protagonists. Take a look.

Queen
This was the best female-centric film of 2014.There couldn't have been a better day for this Kanagana Ranaut starrer - the film was released on Women's Day. The film is a story of a girl who goes on a honeymoon alone after being dumped by her fiance at the altar. Director Vikas Bahl so beautifully showed journey of self-realisation of a woman in the film.

The film got critical as well as commercial success. Kangana swept everyone off their feet by her acting in the film.

Mardaani
Rani Mukerji made a solid come back with this film. She played the character of a senior cop in crime branch, in the film that deals with a serious subject of women trafficking. Rani was pitch perfect in her role as a woman cop.

Highway
Highway is the of journey of Veera, played brilliantly by Alia Bhatt, from the comfort of her home to the outside world. Veera gets kidnapped by a truck driver Mahabir Bhati, played by Randeep Hooda. Both of them carrying scars of their childhood do this journey of self-realisation together. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was liked by both critics and audience.

Mary Kom
Biopic of one of the strongest women of our country Mary Kom, the film shows her journey from a small village of Manipur to five-time world boxing champion. Priyanka Chopra played Mary Kom in the film. The biopic was a box-office success.

Bobby Jasoos
Though Vidya Balan's detective drama couldn't pull in the crowds, her acting was appreciated by the critics. Vidya was seen in 12 different disguise in the film.

Dedh Ishqiya
The sequel to Ishqiya, the film had the main characters from the prequel - Khalujaan and Babban. And new characters played by Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. The film was a treat to watch because of the brilliant performances by its lead actors . The film, directed by Abhishek Chaubey, got critical acclaim but was average at the box office.

Gulaab Gang
The film made two arch-rivals of their time Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla come together on sliver screen. It was Madhuri Dixit's comeback film. Though both the actors impressed everyone by their acting, the film didn't do well at the box office.

Revolver Rani
After Queen, Kangana Ranaut was seen in another female-centric film Revolver Rani. The film is a story of Alka Singh, the leader of a political party, and her obsessive love for Rohan Mehra, a rising star of Bollywood. Once again Kangana was praised for her performance but the film failed at the box office.

Khoobsurat
A remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee film with the same name, the film marked the debut of Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan. A physiotherapist Mili falls in love with a Rajput prince (Fawad Khan) who is not only her complete opposite but also is engaged to someone else. The film performed well at the box office.
