How to keep water cool in a matka all day naturally
Ditch the fridge and go back to basics. Here's how a simple matka can keep your water naturally cool all day. From smart placement to easy hacks, these age-old tips make summer hydration refreshing, sustainable, and chemical-free.

Earthen pots, or matkas, have been used for centuries to store naturally cool drinking water. Their porous surface allows slow evaporation, which helps reduce the temperature without electricity. With a few simple practices, you can keep your matka water cool throughout the day.
Start with a high-quality clay pot that is unglazed and slightly porous. This allows better evaporation, which is key to natural cooling. Avoid painted or coated pots, as they reduce the cooling effect.
SOAK THE MATKA BEFORE USE
Before using a new matka, soak it in water for 12–24 hours. This helps strengthen the pores and improves its cooling efficiency from the very first use.
KEEP IT IN A COOL, SHADED PLACE
Place the matka in a well-ventilated and shaded area, away from direct sunlight. Airflow enhances evaporation, which keeps the water cooler for longer.
USE A CLOTH COVER
Cover the matka with a clean, damp cotton cloth. As the cloth dries, it aids additional evaporation, boosting the cooling process naturally.
PLACE IT ON A STAND OR SAND BASE
Keep the matka on a wooden stand or a tray filled with sand. You can lightly sprinkle water on the sand to enhance cooling through evaporation.
REFILL WITH ROOM TEMPERATURE WATER
Avoid adding very cold or very hot water. Refill with normal temperature water so the matka can regulate the cooling naturally.
KEEP THE LID CLOSED
Always cover the matka with a lid to prevent heat, dust, and insects from entering, while still maintaining internal coolness.
CLEAN THE MATKA REGULARLY
Wash the matka every few days with mild water (no soap residue) to prevent odor or buildup, ensuring fresh and safe drinking water.
ADD NATURAL COOLING INGREDIENTS
You can enhance the cooling effect by adding a few fresh mint leaves, vetiver (khus), or fennel seeds to the water for a refreshing twist.
AVOID OVERFILLING
Leave a little space at the top of the matka. This allows better air circulation inside, improving the cooling process.
Using these simple, traditional methods, you can enjoy naturally cool and refreshing water all day just the way it’s been done for generations.
