The move is aimed at improving rail capacity, making train operations more reliable and supporting faster movement of both passengers and freight.
The projects will replace older power systems with a more advanced setup that can handle growing traffic demand more efficiently.
WHAT HAS RAILWAYS APPROVED?
The Ministry of Railways has approved the upgrade of the existing 1x25 kV electric traction system to a modern 2x25 kV electric traction system on both routes. According to the ministry, the new system will provide a more stable and efficient power supply for train operations.
KEY PROJECT DETAILS
WHY THE BENGALURU-TUMAKURU ROUTE IS IMPORTANT
The Bengaluru-Tumakuru section is part of the Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-10, linking major economic and industrial centres along the Pune-Hubballi-Chikjajur-Birur-Tumakuru-Bengaluru-Salem-Kanniyakumari corridor.
The upgrade will cover 120 track kilometres and is expected to help ease congestion while supporting smoother passenger and freight movement across Karnataka and southern India.
WHAT CHANGES ON THE SECUNDERABAD ROUTE?
The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section is part of a major High-Density Network route connecting Dharmavaram, Dhone, Secunderabad, Mudkhed, Indore and Ajmer.
Railways says the new traction system will improve efficiency, increase route capacity and support faster movement of goods, helping trade and industry in the region.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR PASSENGERS?
The upgraded 2x25 kV system is designed to provide a stronger and more reliable power supply for trains.
Over time, this can help railways handle more trains on these routes, improve operational efficiency and support smoother journeys for passengers while also boosting freight movement.
