The historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat became the centre of spiritual celebrations during the Somnath Amrit Mahotsav 2026, where a rare Kumbhabhishek ceremony was performed as part of the temple’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the rituals and special prayers held during the celebrations.

The ceremony drew attention not only because of its scale but also because Kumbhabhishek is considered one of the most sacred temple rituals in Hindu traditions.

WHAT IS KUMBHABHISHEK?

Kumbhabhishek is an ancient Vedic ritual performed for the spiritual purification and energising of a temple.

The word comes from two Sanskrit terms, “Kumbh”, meaning sacred pot, and “Abhishek”, meaning ritual bathing.

During the ceremony, holy water sanctified through Vedic chants and rituals is poured over the temple’s main spire and deity idols.

The ritual is usually performed after temple reconstruction, renovation or at fixed spiritual intervals.

Religious scholars believe the ceremony renews the divine energy of the temple and strengthens its spiritual atmosphere for devotees.

WHY THE SOMNATH CEREMONY IS SPECIAL

The Kumbhabhishek held during Somnath Amrit Mahotsav is considered historically important because it was performed on the temple’s shikhar, or main spire, after several decades.

Holy water from 11 major pilgrimage sites across India was brought for the ceremony.

Reports said a specially designed ceremonial kalash carrying the sacred water was lifted to the top of the temple using crane technology.

The celebrations also included Vishesh Maha Puja, Dhwajarohan and Jal Abhishek rituals.

Flower petals were showered over the temple premises from helicopters, while the Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team performed an aerial display above Somnath.

A TEMPLE WITH DEEP HISTORICAL ROOTS

Located at Prabhas Patan on Gujarat’s Arabian Sea coast, the Somnath Temple is regarded as the first among the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times across centuries and is often seen as a symbol of India’s spiritual continuity and resilience.

This year’s Somnath Amrit Mahotsav is being celebrated as both a spiritual gathering and a remembrance of the temple’s long historical journey.
