Deepa: Making it big in the south
Malayalam actressDeepa, 19, had, till recently, nothing going for her except her out of proportion bustline.....till she accidentally stumbled on a role that has paved the way for a glittery future. She replaced the temperamental, heady superbrat of Hindi films,Rekha, in what has come to be known as the swiftest coup in the south. Rekha, who was to star in the Tamil film Meendum Kokila, was unceremoniously dropped from the film which also stars the superstar craze of the south, Kamalahasan, and replaced by the impish schoolgirl Deepa. Deepa was overjoyed when the film become a box-office hit (more credit to Kamalahasanthan her). She capped her success by getting married to an English lecturer last fortnight. But Deepa has no plans to give up everything else for marriage. She intends to study (having appeared for her pre-university examination just before her marriage), and of course act for films. She has already appeared in over 75 films in all the four south Indian languages and in her forthcoming Telugu film Radha Madhav, she has landed a plum role opposite the rugged and earthy playwright, actor, director, Girish Karnad."It's an award-winning film," chuckled Deepa.
