the Vietnamese and the Kampuchean guerrillas, between the Soviets and
the Afghan rebels.

"The edge of war, like an ill-sheathed knife...." imports an ionised intensity to the politics of a tormented planet. The edge is particularly visible in the geopolitical region in which India resides, the "arc of crisis" stretching from Turkey to the Horn of Africa, and including in its seething sweep the entire subcontinent.
