Director Antoine Fuqua's Michael, based on the life of Michael Jackson, is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched releases of 2026. The film traces Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to global superstardom. At the heart of the film is Jaafar Jackson, the late singer’s nephew, who makes his acting debut in the titular role.

In an exclusive to India Today, Antoine emphasised that the film avoids imitation and instead leans into emotional truth. "What draws you into Michael’s world is Jaafar’s absolute authenticity," he said.

"We all agreed there could be no imitating Michael. Instead, what Jaafar accomplished was to be completely in the moment and bring that same positive spirit we saw Michael bring to everything he did. It’s something you can feel," the director added.

Jaafar echoed that personal connection, and said, "As a kid, I was obsessed with him."

The film has already generated significant buzz, with its teaser becoming the most-watched in Lionsgate’s history for a musical biopic. However, Michael also enters a genre known for mixed results, with recent music biopics delivering both breakout successes and notable underperformers. Early reviews are expected to be crucial in determining whether audience curiosity translates into sustained ticket sales.

Michael also features actors Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo in key roles.

The biographical drama is written by John Logan and is co-produced by Graham King, John Branca and John McClain. The film is jointly backed by Lionsgate Films and GK Films. It is distributed by Lionsgate Films and Universal Pictures.

Michael is set for a theatrical release in India on April 24, 2026.
