Russell Brand reacts to Katy Perry dating Justin Trudeau: KP, you took it too far
Russell Brand joked about ex-wife Katy Perry's reported relationship with Justin Trudeau, saying she "took it too far." He also reflected on their failed marriage, admitting that his insecurities and obsession with fame contributed to their divorce.

Comedian and actor Russell Brand joked about ex-wife Katy Perry’s current relationship with Justin Trudeau in a podcast. He also admitted that he “didn’t handle that marriage very well.” In a recent interview, Brand reflected on his insecurities, took responsibility for mistakes in his marriage and shared thoughts on Perry’s love life.
At The Megyn Kelly Show on Wednesday (April 22), Russell Brand discussed his new book How to Become a Christian in 7 Days, joked about Katy Perry’s current relationship with Justin Trudeau and reflected on their past marriage.
Russell Brand jokes about Katy Perry’s current relationship
Russell Brand said Katy Perry was “really, really lovely” and made it clear he had no issues with her previous relationship with Orlando Bloom. However, he joked about her current high-profile relationship and shared his reservations.
“I put up with a lot with that ex-wife of mine, but you took it too far, KP,” he quipped.
"Orlando Bloom, I love that guy. Brilliant. Justin Trudeau, though, potentially Fidel Castro’s spawn. No, there we draw the line,” he said.
Brand went on to call Justin Trudeau “a child God” and said he still disagrees with how he handled the trucker protests against Covid-19 vaccine mandates in Canada. He also questioned the sincerity of what he described as “good looking politicians,” naming Barack Obama, Emmanuel Macron and Tony Blair.
He added that he was still jokingly hopeful Perry “could come to her senses at any minute” and move on from Justin Trudeau.
Russell Brand reflects on divorce from Katy Perry
Opening up further about their relationship, Brand reflected on the mistakes he made during his marriage to Perry and admitted that his insecurities and obsession with fame played a major role in their split.
Brand revealed that he has not spoken to Perry since telling her he wanted a divorce. However, he said that he remains in touch with her parents, ministers Keith and Mary Hudson, whom he described as “good Christian folks.”
Reflecting on their marriage, Brand said he realised he was drawn not only to Perry but also to the attention that came with being part of a high-profile relationship.
He also praised Perry, calling the Roar singer “a very beautiful person” who worked hard for her success, while admitting that he may have felt intimidated by her fame.
“Here’s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I wanted to grab her like, ‘There, got it’ I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw this big, glorious thing, even though I knew her as a person as well. Everyone is a normal person,” he said.
Brand further admitted that it was his decision to push for marriage early because of his own insecurities. Perry was 25 and Brand was 35 when they got married in 2010.
“I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and like I wasn’t enough, and that, if I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important. That put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain, and she couldn’t fulfill those obligations,” he said.
The couple announced their split just 14 months after getting married in December 2011. Perry later revealed that Brand informed her about the divorce through a text message.
Brand said his failed relationships ultimately helped him grow and led him to his current marriage with Laura Gallacher, adding that he has now learned to stop trying to take validation from others and focus on his personal life.
