Actor Vishal has praised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay after the state allowed theatres to screen five shows a day for newly released films in their first week. Calling Vijay the “most prolific actor turned politician”, Vishal said the move came as relief for the film industry.

The decision was announced days after members of the industry raised suggestions on improving the situation in Kollywood. An official note issued from Vijay’s CM X handle on Monday stated that the Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatres (Regulation) Rules have been amended. The new rules allow five screenings a day for seven days from the release of new Tamil films, while also permitting five daily screenings on local festivals, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Responding to the announcement on X, Vishal wrote, "Thank you, dear @CMOTamilnadu #Vijay avargale, darling of the masses and the most prolific actor turned politician, for understanding the current situation in the film industry and implementing five shows a day for all films for the first 7 days of the film's theatrical release (sic)."

CM Vijay's office approves new screening rules

The press release from the official CM X handle in Tamil read, "The film industry members met the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. C. Joseph Vijay, on 16.5.2026 and presented various demands. Among them, they mainly demanded that all films be allowed to be screened in theatres across Tamil Nadu for five screenings per day (sic)."

It further read, "The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, after considering the request made by the film industry, has amended the Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatres (Regulation) Rules."

"Accordingly, all cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu are allowed to screen five screenings daily for seven days from the date of release of newly released Tamil films and five screenings daily on local festivals and public holidays. Saturdays and Sundays," the statement concluded. It also emphasised that producers would not need permission from the government and licensing officer for this.

While Vijay’s political engagements continue to draw public attention, his upcoming film Jana Nayagan remains in limbo, with no official confirmation on its release date from the makers.

Jana Nayagan also features Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Bobby Deol in key roles.
