Rajya Sabha MP, P Wilson (R), shared a pointed remark about Vijay's political competence in connection with Jana Nayagan leak.

The online leak of Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated film, Jana Nayagan, has ignited a political firestorm. Amidst the scandal, P Wilson, Rajya Sabha MP for the DMK, has publicly questioned Vijay’s political competence. He drew a sharp parallel between the film's security breach and the actor's ambitions to govern Tamil Nadu. This comment came as Vijay is contesting in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as the chief of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The film, which is currently awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), suffered a significant security breach when the entire film, in HD print, was leaked online by a freelance editor.

In an X post, Wilson weighed in on the incident to critique the actor-turned-politician. He wrote, "So the leak was from an editing studio hired by #Jananayagan's production team? Basically, @actorvijay couldn't protect his own movie; he's claiming he can protect Tamil Nadu! (sic)."

Police investigation and arrests

The incident has sparked a major crackdown by the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing. On April 16, authorities arrested three key suspects involved in the unauthorised leak. According to official reports, a freelance assistant editor gained unauthorised access to the film's footage, which had been cut into reels, as part of the editing process. The individual allegedly copied the reels, stitched them into a full-length film, and leaked the file online.

The situation escalated quickly, with the entire film appearing on the internet in high-definition (HD) print. In response, the producers, KVN Productions, filed a formal complaint and sought an interim injunction to restrain service providers and cable operators from broadcasting the pirated movie.

To date, nine individuals have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Production and release hurdles

Jana Nayagan, which is billed as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his full-time transition into politics, has faced a series of setbacks. The project has been entangled in a month-long legal standoff with the CBFC regarding its certification.

The board members expressed concerns over specific sequences in the film that could potentially disturb public sentiment, leading the producers to eventually withdraw their initial case and refer the film to a revising committee. As of now, the movie remains uncertified.

Current reports suggest that Jana Nayagan is unlikely to see a theatrical release until after the completion of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. While the polling is scheduled for April 23, the election results will be announced on May 4.
