As parents of 7-year-old Pradyuman, who was killed inside the Ryan International School in Gurgaon on Friday, are hopeful of justice with the Supreme Court taking cognisance of the matter, there are some basic and pressing questions that we in our show Newsroom are keen to find answers to.
It is shocking to mention that CCTV cameras inside the school were
either not installed or not working and there were no security guards present. With no one to prevent strangers from walking freely inside
classrooms and toilets and liquor shops operating barely a stone's throw
from school, the shocking safety risk has been too glaring to be
overlooked by anyone.
This case is the second instance of a child dying in 2 years at Ryan International School.
The Supreme Court has pulled up the Manohar
Lal Khattar government over this issue. A three-member probe panel
formed by the Haryana government has submitted its report, confirming
the lapses mentioned above.
How can we really make our schools safe for kids?
Should the government, both at the Centre and at the state levels frame mandatory security measures for all schools?
Should there be regular safety audits of schools?
Should school owners be made accountable for such horrors?
Do we need a separate law for school safety?
