IPL 2026: Is MS Dhoni's injury setback a blessing in disguise for CSK?

IPL 2026: MS Dhoni's injury may give Chennai Super Kings an overdue chance to rethink their combinations, as the franchise begins confronting what life without its iconic finisher might look like.

The cricketing world was put on alert when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced that their 44-year-old former captain, MS Dhoni, had been ruled out for the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League 2026 due to a calf strain.

For years, the question has lingered in the background. What does Chennai Super Kings look like without MS Dhoni?

Sunil Gavaskar believes the answer may finally begin to take shape.

"At some stage, they have to figure out their XI without him," he said on JioStar's pre-match show, days before CSK's IPL 2026 opener against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday, March 30.

"Clearly, this could be that opportunity over the next two weeks. If he's not there, that means three or maybe four matches that he'll miss, giving them a chance to see what kind of XI they need to win games."

Dhoni, who took over the captaincy last season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out midway through the campaign with an injury, played all 14 matches but could not prevent CSK from finishing with the wooden spoon.

THE DELAYED ENTRIES

More telling than the results, however, was how Dhoni chose to operate.

He increasingly withdrew into the margins of the innings. The once definitive finisher, so often the last word in a chase, now arrived later and later, conserving himself for brief cameos rather than extended responsibility. It was a shift shaped as much by circumstance as by strategy.

A troublesome knee, one that has shadowed him for several years, dictated those decisions. Dhoni managed his appearances carefully, stepping in when a late surge was required but rarely pushing himself higher up the order. The numbers reflected that restraint: 196 runs across 13 innings, a highest score of 30 not out, and a strike rate of 135.17. Useful, but no longer defining.

Former South African pacer Dale Steyn also described the situation as a blessing in disguise. "It allows them to look at what the future of Chennai Super Kings will look like," he said on a pre-match show.

Dhoni, now in the twilight of his career, may well have had the perfect opportunity to retire after leading the franchise to their fifth title in 2023. During that campaign, he battled severe knee issues and underwent surgery on his left knee soon after the tournament.

Since then, Dhoni has continued to deal with recurring knee problems, which have affected his ability to perform at full capacity. "My fitness is on the way down, not the way up," he admitted during CSK's 'ROAR 2026' event.

CSK have, at least on paper, begun preparing for life beyond him. The acquisition of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals, in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the 2026 mini-auction, was a significant move. Samson, fresh from a standout T20 World Cup campaign with India where he was named Player of the Tournament, is expected to open the batting and take over wicketkeeping duties.

Yet replacing Dhoni has never been about filling a single role. It is about redistributing a presence that shaped the rhythm of the side for over a decade. While Samson offers a long-term option behind the stumps, the immediate concern lies elsewhere.

CSK's lower middle order, once defined by certainty, now feels unsettled.

That uncertainty has only been compounded by the absence of Dewald Brevis for the opening match. The South African's side strain leaves CSK short of a natural aggressor in the middle order, and potentially without an overseas batter in the XI until he returns.

LOWER MIDDLE-ORDER HEADACHE

In Dhoni's absence, the question of who assumes the finisher's role becomes unavoidable. Ravichandran Ashwin offered an early blueprint, suggesting Sarfaraz Khan—his preferred option—or Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Ayush Mhatre at number six.

For the seventh spot, Ashwin leaned towards one of CSK's Rs 14.20 crore uncapped signings, favouring wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma over bowling all-rounder Prashant Veer. The logic is clear: if the lower order lacks experience, it must at least offer intent.

Brevis's absence, however, could force a rethink. Both Kartik and Prashant may find themselves included, while Ramakrishna Ghosh, the medium pace-bowling all-rounder from Madhya Pradesh, remains a viable option after an impressive build-up to the season.

Team balance will be delicate. An overseas spinner like Akeal Hosein strengthens the bowling, but risks further thinning the batting. Jamie Overton, by contrast, offers a different compromise—pace with the added advantage of late-order hitting.

There are other possibilities. Matt Short, the Australian power-hitter, could be drafted into the middle order as a temporary solution until Brevis returns. None of these options, however, quite replicate what Dhoni once provided: assurance under pressure.

And that, perhaps, is the central point.

For years, Chennai Super Kings have operated with the comfort of inevitability. However the match unfolded, there was always the sense that Dhoni would have the final say. His absence, even for a brief stretch, removes that certainty.

What remains is an opportunity: one that CSK have long delayed. Over the next few weeks, they may finally discover what their future looks like.

And whether they are ready for it.

RR VS CSK: HEAD-TO-HEAD

Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings have shared a closely contested rivalry, with little separating the two sides over the years.

  • Matches played: 31
  • RR won: 15
  • CSK won: 16
  • No result: 0

The narrow margin reflects how evenly matched the two teams have been, adding further intrigue to their IPL 2026 opener.

RR VS CSK: WEATHER REPORT

Weather could play a part in Guwahati, with a 30 percent chance of rain earlier in the day.

Conditions are expected to remain mostly cloudy with a passing shower in the afternoon. The evening is likely to stay humid with lingering cloud cover and a couple of late showers possible. Temperatures will range between 27°C and 19°C, with humidity around 84 percent.

Encouragingly, the probability of rain is expected to drop to around 20 percent during match hours, improving the chances of uninterrupted play.

RR VS CSK: PITCH REPORT

The Barsapara Cricket Stadium has typically offered a batting-friendly surface, with little assistance for bowlers once the pitch settles.

The average score here is around 175-185, and chasing has often been the preferred option due to shorter boundaries and a quick outfield.

A fresh pitch is set to be used for Monday’s clash, though rain on the eve of the match forced it under covers. Early moisture could assist bowlers initially, before conditions ease under lights.
