Pressure mounts on Hardik Pandya as MI's ship faces stormy Ahmedabad test vs GT
IPL 2026, GT vs MI: Mumbai Indians have lost four games on the trot and will be eager to return to winning ways against Gujarat Titans at a venue where they are yet to register a victory over them.

Mumbai Indians have been all over the place in IPL 2026, with skipper Hardik Pandya under immense pressure. With four defeats already, they are languishing at the bottom of the table. Known to be slow starters, MI still have everything to play for when they take on the Gujarat Titans on Monday, April 20 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Titans, meanwhile, are on a roll, having won three matches on the trot. In fact, ever since Shubman Gill unveiled his new beard look, the team seems to have found its rhythm. Historically strong against MI, the Titans will look to capitalise on their opponent’s struggles, aiming to secure another win and reclaim a place in the top four.
WILL ROHIT SHARMA PLAY AGAINST GT?
Rohit Sharma missed the clash against Punjab Kings due to a hamstring injury, but Mumbai Indians barely felt his absence as Quinton de Kock, stepping in as Ryan Rickelton’s opening partner, smashed a brilliant century. The big question now is whether Rohit will return for the upcoming game against the Titans, though there remains some uncertainty.
As per the latest update, Rohit has resumed batting in the nets in Ahmedabad and is being closely monitored by the medical team along with head coach Mahela Jayawardene. A final call on his availability is yet to be made.
If Rohit does return, Rickelton could be the one to make way, especially after de Kock’s match-winning performance the other night. Meanwhile, Will Jacks is also expected to link up with the squad soon, adding further options to the lineup.
CAN BUMRAH ARREST HIS SLUMP?
While MI are sweating over Rohit’s fitness, they have other pressing concerns. Jasprit Bumrah is enduring a rare rough patch, yet to claim a single wicket in IPL 2026. Having bowled 114 deliveries, the speedster has looked well below his best for the five-time champions this season.
MI’s bowling unit has struggled throughout the tournament, with the likes of Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar conceding at over 13 runs per over. Only Mitchell Santner has maintained an economy rate under 10 (9.28), underlining how difficult it has been for MI in the bowling department.
Bumrah’s dip in form has only compounded their problems. The team has staged comebacks with their backs to the wall in the past, but if they are to revive their campaign this season, Bumrah must rediscover his rhythm and quickly.
CAN GUJARAT MAKE IT 5-0 IN AHMEDABAD?
The Narendra Modi Stadium hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Mumbai Indians, with Gujarat Titans defeating them in all four meetings at the venue. The closest MI came to a win in Ahmedabad was in 2024, when they fell short by six runs while chasing 169. In the other three encounters, the Titans have comfortably dominated.
However, GT are yet to hit top gear at home this season, with one win against KKR and a loss to Rajasthan Royals—both games going down to the final over. Riding a hat-trick of wins, the Titans will look to avoid any slip-ups and capitalise against teams that are struggling.
AHMEDABAD: PITCH AND CONDITIONS
The pitch in Ahmedabad has been favourable for batters, with teams needing around the 200-run mark to feel competitive. The average score from two games at the venue in IPL 2026 stands at 195. In recent T20 matches here, teams batting first have enjoyed an advantage, which could prompt captains to avoid chasing.
Conditions are expected to be hot, with temperatures around 37 degrees Celsius. There is no forecast of rain, with clear skies overhead, and humidity levels are likely to remain on the lower side.
GT vs MI: HEAD-TO-HEAD
Mumbai Indians have won three of their eight matches against Gujarat Titans since 2022. However, they are yet to beat GT in Ahmedabad, having lost all four encounters at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
