Royal Challengers Bengaluru Preview: Are RCB ready for a title defence?
RCB enter IPL 2026 facing a new challenge, defending their maiden title. With a settled core but early bowling concerns, their campaign will test whether last season's success can translate into sustained dominance.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are stepping into unfamiliar territory. For the first time in their IPL history, they are not chasing a title, they are defending one. The narrative has flipped. The pressure feels different. And the expectations are heavier.
Only two teams in the tournament’s history have managed to go back-to-back. Chennai Super Kings did it in 2010 and 2011, while Mumbai Indians followed with titles in 2019 and 2020. That is the benchmark RCB are now up against.
Last season worked because everything clicked. Roles were clear, contributions were collective, and, crucially, they held their nerve in key moments. That structure remains largely intact heading into IPL 2026, with most of the title-winning core retained.
The numbers underline how complete they were. RCB picked up 27 wickets in the PowerPlay, the most in IPL 2025, while conceding at just 8.73 runs per over, the best in the phase. Away from home, their batting struck at 163.72, second only to Punjab Kings.
At the top, Phil Salt set the tone with a strike rate of 180.76. Jitesh Sharma finished games at 224.24, while captain Rajat Patidar held the middle together at 170.75. Amid all that aggression, Virat Kohli played the stabilising role, averaging 99.25 in away matches.
But IPL 2026 begins with a slight shift in balance. Josh Hazlewood, who gave RCB control with the ball (10 wickets, economy 7.27), is unlikely to feature early due to fitness concerns. That alone changes how this team functions.
And that is where the real challenge lies, not just in winning again, but in sustaining it.
IPL 2026: RCB STRENGTHS
RCB’s biggest strength is continuity. This is not a side searching for combinations, it is one that already knows them.
The batting unit covers all phases. Kohli anchors, Salt attacks early, and Patidar ensures stability through the middle. The finishing duo of Tim David and Jitesh gives them one of the most explosive back-ends in the league.
David, in particular, was devastating at the death last season, striking at 203.22, while Romario Shepherd offered a dual advantage with both bat and ball, striking at 291.66 and picking up key wickets, including one in the final.
The all-round depth adds another layer. Krunal Pandya, Shepherd, and others allow RCB to adjust depending on conditions without breaking their core structure.
With the ball, at full strength, RCB are among the most disciplined units. Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar controlled the PowerPlay, setting up games early.
Above all, this is now a side that knows how to close. That confidence, built over a title-winning season, is not easy to replicate, but it is a clear advantage.
IPL 2026: RCB WEAKNESS
The immediate concern is the bowling balance without Hazlewood.
RCB lose not just wickets, but control across phases. The burden now falls heavily on Bhuvneshwar to lead the attack, especially at the Chinnaswamy, where margins are minimal.
The backup options bring uncertainty. Jacob Duffy has strong numbers globally, 23 PowerPlay wickets since 2025, but struggled in Indian conditions. Rasikh Dar Salam did not have a strong IPL 2025, and Mangesh Yadav is still untested at this level.
The middle order, while explosive, is high-risk. If early wickets fall, RCB can find themselves exposed.
Spin is another area that lacks depth beyond Suyash Sharma, especially on slower surfaces.

IPL 2026: 3 RCB PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Jacob Duffy: Brought in as cover for Hazlewood, Duffy’s PowerPlay record stands out, 23 wickets since 2025. But the bigger question is adaptation. Can he crack Indian conditions where he has previously struggled?
Mangesh Yadav: The 23-year-old is being seen as a direct replacement for Yash Dayal. He brings pace, swing, and a bit of all-round value, but this will be his first real test at the IPL level.
Jacob Bethell: One of the most intriguing selection calls. Bethell’s stock has risen sharply, 280 runs in the 2026 T20 World Cup at a strike rate of 152.17, along with centuries in Tests and ODIs. But fitting him into this XI is not straightforward. To play him at the top means dropping Salt. To slot him in the middle means sacrificing either Tim David’s finishing or Shepherd’s all-round balance. His presence gives RCB options, but also a selection headache.
