IPL 2026: After a season of what-ifs, LSG and DC chase opening punch in Lucknow

IPL 2026, LSG vs DC preview: After campaigns of squandered promise, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals reset in Lucknow, boasting stronger, more balanced squads. The northern neighbours look to seize early momentum and finally turn potential into consistent results.

In the City of Nawabs, where tradition and grace have long dictated the pace of life, the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium prepares to host a spectacle that demands a different kind of poise. On Wednesday, as the dust settles on the opening exchanges of the 2026 Indian Premier League, the Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals meet in a fixture defined by a shared, nagging sense of what if.

Lucknow Super Giants take on Delhi Capitals in Lucknow. The game will begin at 7:30 pm IST. JioHotstar will stream the match live in India, while the TV broadcast will be on Star Sports.

For both franchises, the 2025 campaign was a study in squandered momentum. They began like sprinters in a 100m dash, dominating the early stages of the tournament, only to fade like tired marathoners, finishing fifth and seventh respectively as the playoff spots slipped away.

Yet, as they step onto the red soil of Lucknow on Wednesday, the narrative has shifted from post-mortem to possibility. Having spent the auction cycle surgically addressing the structural gaps that led to their mid-table slump, both teams now appear remarkably well-rounded. They boast an array of superstars, from Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul to promising domestic talents like Auqib Nabi, but what could truly set them apart this season is the balance within their squads.

If the opening week of the IPL has exposed teams like Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad for their lack of balance, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants seem far less vulnerable on that front.

FRAGILE TO FORMIDABLE: HOW LSG STACK UP?

A fully-fit Mayank Yadav is ready to roll for LSG (PTI Photo)

The most dramatic transformation lies in Lucknow’s bowling room. In 2025, an injury-laden pace attack let the side down; even as the batting clicked, the inability to field a consistent seam unit cost them dearly, particularly in the death overs.

Fast-forward to tonight, and LSG boast perhaps the most enviable pace battery in the competition. The headline is the return of a fully fit Mayank Yadav, whose raw pace remains the tournament’s most discussed X-factor. He is joined by the veteran guile of Mohammed Shami, whose inclusion provides the tactical leadership this young group lacked. With a fit-again Avesh Khan and the left-arm variety of Mohsin Khan also available, Lucknow finally has the well-rounded attack head coach Justin Langer has long craved.

The depth doesn’t end there. Local interest will be piqued by 20-year-old Naman Tiwari, a Lucknow boy capable of clocking 145 kph. Young Akash Singh and Arjun Tendulkar also provide backup left-arm pace options.

Langer, speaking to the press on Tuesday, confirmed that Mayank Yadav is fit for selection.

“Yeah, they're both fit. They're both very exciting prospects, and they've got huge futures,” Langer said.

“The beautiful thing for this tournament, which we haven't had in the past, is that we not only have those two young bowlers, but also Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, Mohammad Shami, Akash Singh, Anrich Nortje from South Africa, Arjun Tendulkar. We've got all these guys who are fit,” he added.

Meanwhile, the mystery of leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi remains a primary defensive weapon. After a stellar debut season, all eyes will be on Rathi to see if he can maintain his unpredictability now that opposition analysts have had a year to study him.

While the bowling has been reinforced, the batting core is high on confidence. The overseas opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram bring considerable experience, while Nicholas Pooran remains their X-factor.

LSG also boast an in-form Indian batting core. Abdul Samad arrives fresh from playing a pivotal role in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy triumph, appearing more mature in his shot selection. He is supported by the versatile Shahbaz Ahmed and the ever-reliable Ayush Badoni.

Badoni’s recent call-up to the national squad, following a consistent domestic run for Delhi, suggests he is ready to evolve from a finisher into a pillar of the middle order.

CAN PANT FIRE?

However, for all the tactical scaffolding and the depth of the Indian core, the Super Giants’ ambitions rest squarely on the shoulders of their captain, Rishabh Pant. While he punctuated the end of the 2025 season with a defiant century, Pant’s white-ball stocks have fluctuated, prompting a period of intense self-reflection.

The version that has arrived in Lucknow for 2026 is noticeably leaner and meaner, the result of a gruelling fitness odyssey following an injury-interrupted year. In a bid to rediscover his clinical edge, he spent the off-season working under Yuvraj Singh, a partnership aimed at marrying his natural flair with sharper match awareness.

During a marathon net session on Tuesday, the rust was still visible and the fluency wasn’t quite there yet. However, the intent was unmistakable. Pant attempted the full range of his repertoire, from classical down-the-ground lofts to his trademark, gravity-defying scoops. Most telling, however, was his engagement between sets: long, animated discussions with Justin Langer, Mitchell Marsh, and particularly newly appointed Director of Cricket Tom Moody, who appeared to be shadowing his every move. If Moody can channel Pant’s explosive energy into a consistent middle-order force, Lucknow may finally have the leader capable of turning their mid-table finishes into a genuine title charge.

WHAT’S UP WITH DELHI CAPITALS?

For the Delhi Capitals, the narrative is one of swift adaptation. With Mitchell Starc sidelined due to injury, the Capitals must mask a significant void in their pace attack until the seasoned Australian returns. The red soil of the Ekana, known to offer lateral movement, may see them favour the skiddy pace of Dushmantha Chameera and Lungi Ngidi. Chameera, speaking to the press on Tuesday, sounded confident about exploiting the local conditions, but the real intrigue lies in the potential IPL debut of Auqib Nabi.

Bought for Rs 8.40 crore after a record-breaking Ranji Trophy season with Jammu & Kashmir, Nabi is the man of the moment. He provides an essential all-round option, capable of swinging the new ball and adding depth to a batting lineup that needs to support its spin-heavy core. All eyes will be on how the youngster handles the transition from domestic dominance to the high-pressure environment of the IPL.

At the top of the order, captain Axar Patel has confirmed that KL Rahul will return to his preferred opening slot, bringing much-needed stability to a position that was a revolving door last season. He is likely to partner Pathum Nissanka, who was in sensational form in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Delhi also have Prithvi Shaw back in their ranks, but he may have to wait for his opportunity this season.

The arrival of Nitish Rana provides a seasoned anchor at number three, but it is the acquisition of David Miller for just Rs 2 crore that looks like the undisputed steal of the auction. Miller brings a wealth of experience to a unit that already boasts the explosive Tristan Stubbs, who was seen striking the ball crisply on Tuesday. The experienced South African is likely to be used as a floater, unlocking the likes of Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma for a late-overs surge.

LUCKNOW: PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The Ekana surface has evolved. Once a graveyard for stroke-makers, it has shown more consistent carry in recent times, offering a fair contest between bat and ball. However, in the humidity of an April evening in Uttar Pradesh, the toss remains a critical factor. The ball may skid on under lights, making chasing the preferred option.

That said, it rained overnight in Lucknow, and if the sun plays hide and seek through the day, residual moisture could aid fast bowlers in the early stages.

DC vs LSG: HEAD-TO-HEAD

Delhi have held the upper hand in recent meetings, winning the last four encounters between these two sides. However, a new season at a refreshed home venue offers Lucknow the perfect platform to break that streak.
