Mohammed Shami acquitted in cheque bounce case filed by wife Hasin Jahan
An Alipore court acquitted Mohammed Shami in the Rs 1 lakh cheque bounce case filed by wife Hasin Jahan. The ruling brings legal relief, even as their maintenance and alimony dispute continues in higher courts.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has received relief in a cheque bounce case, with the Alipore Court acquitting him of charges filed by his wife, Hasin Jahan, over a bounced cheque worth Rs 1 lakh. The case had been pending before the Alipore Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court for the past four years. On Wednesday, the court ruled that the allegations against Shami could not be proven.
The case dates back to 2018, when Hasin Jahan alleged that Shami had issued her a cheque worth Rs 1 lakh towards household expenses, which later bounced after being deposited in a bank. She subsequently approached the court. Alongside this case, Hasin Jahan had also filed multiple complaints against Shami and members of his family under various penal provisions.
Shami appeared in court on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters after the verdict, he said: “I knew the verdict would go in our favour because I had done nothing wrong. I have paid every penny that I was required to pay.”
He added: “Whether on or off the field, I always strive to handle every situation to the best of my ability.”
Shami is currently representing Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL but has remained in the headlines in recent years because of ongoing personal and legal disputes.
Referring to the difficulties he faced during periods away from cricket, Shami said: “Not everything is within one’s control. Nevertheless, I keep trying.”
The legal battle between Shami and Hasin Jahan over maintenance and alimony remains ongoing. Under directions from the Calcutta High Court, Shami currently pays Rs 1.5 lakh per month to Hasin Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh towards the care and upbringing of their daughter — a total monthly maintenance amount of 4 lakh.
Hasin Jahan later moved the Supreme Court, arguing that the amount was insufficient to meet household expenses. The apex court issued notices to both Shami and the West Bengal government. During proceedings, the court also questioned whether Rs 4 lakh per month was inadequate for the upkeep of a mother and daughter.
Reports suggest that Hasin Jahan continues to reside at Shami’s Kolkata residence, while frequently travelling between Delhi and Kolkata for their daughter’s education. Shami, meanwhile, spends most of his time in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, when not engaged in cricket commitments.
While the maintenance dispute continues, Wednesday’s verdict in the cheque bounce case comes as a significant legal relief for the India fast bowler.
