South Africa Women vs India Women, 2nd T20I: Highlights from Durban

Over and out - That brings us to the end of this one-sided contest, with South Africa Women cruising to a 2-0 lead and now eyeing a series-clinching win in the next game. India Women, meanwhile, must win to stay alive in the series. The action now shifts to the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg for the third match on 22nd April, Wednesday, starting at 9.30 pm IST (4 pm GMT). The victorious skipper of South Africa Women - Laura Wolvaardt says it was pretty good in all three departments. Adds that after the start India had, the bowling unit did well to drag things back. Shares that they have been struggling to execute their bowling in the past few series, but she is happy with how they have handled it in two games so far. Laura reckons there is excitement to win the series, but they'll see the conditions first, expects India to come hard, but they will be ready for the next game.

The captain of India Women - Harmanpreet Kaur says that they were not able to contribute the way they wanted with the bat. Adds that the last 10 overs, they did not bat well and will need to think about how to improve in the remaining three games. Kaur mentions that the Powerplay bowling is also not going their way, but they need to stay together as a team. Says that at the death, if you are not able to hit the shots, strike rotation becomes very important. On Shafali Verma, Karu says that she has been a great talent for them, attacking and scoring runs in the Powerplay and hopefully she continues to do that. Ends by saying that now they are going to a new venue, but the key will be to keep a positive approach and stick together.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Chloe Tryon wins the award for her excellent bowling, finishing with figures of 3/22. She says it was nice to do it in front of friends and family, but more importantly, for South Africa. Tryon mentions that Keshav Maharaj has been with them for the past few days and has helped them a lot. He helped her to stick to the basics and change a little bit of her technical game.

Presentation Time...

No answers to Proteas' charge - There isn't much to talk about India's bowling effort. They were a few runs short, but never looked like building any pressure on the hosts. A few fielding lapses and dropped chances didn't help either, while the bowlers were largely inconsistent and had no answers to the Proteas' onslaught. Shreyanka Patil was the only real bright spot with a couple of wickets, but it was too little too late, leaving India with plenty to think about.

India Women lose the plot - Earlier in the game, India Women once again posted a slightly under-par total, despite Shafali Verma marking her 100th WT20I with a fine half-century and Anushka Sharma chipping in on debut. The innings fell away badly as they lost their last eight wickets for just 48 runs. Chloe Tryon led the charge for South Africa Women with 3/22, while Tumi Sekhukhune also picked up three wickets, with Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba taking one each to cap off a strong bowling effort.

The hosts cruise home - South Africa Women got off to a flying start, led by skipper Laura Wolvaardt's aggression. Sune Luus began cautiously but shifted gears at the right time, and the pair never looked back. They raced to 66 in the Powerplay, equalling their best in the format, and stitched a 106-run opening stand with both bringing up well-made fifties to break the back of the chase. Though neither stayed till the end, they had already set the platform, allowing Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen to finish the job comfortably with just under three overs to spare.

South Africa Women in command - South Africa Women have delivered another strong performance in their own backyard, taking a 2-0 lead in the series and, despite a few flaws, have looked the better side overall in both games. India Women have had their moments but failed to capitalize, and now find themselves in a do-or-die situation.

...THE CHASE...

The hosts are the favourites at this point - South Africa couldn't have scripted a more disciplined performance, showcasing a relentless bowling intent that never wavered despite a high-pressure start. After electing to bowl first, the Proteas remained unfazed by India’s early aggression, consistently chipping away with crucial breakthroughs at the other end to prevent any partnership from reaching a tipping point. While Chloe Tryon set the tone as the standout performer in the first half of the innings, the rest of the attack capitalized on the groundwork she laid, maintaining a strangling hold on the game to finish the innings on a high and seize total momentum. India's batting collapse repeats! It was a sense of déjà vu for India as their batting narrative followed a painfully familiar script from the opening game. Despite a promising platform laid by Shafali Verma’s aggressive start and the tactical inclusion of debutant Anushka Sharma to bolster the middle order, the stability proved to be an illusion. Verma's fifty in her 100th T20I bolstered India's hope for a big score.  India appeared well-positioned at the halfway mark, but the momentum shifted instantly upon Sharma’s dismissal. Her exit triggered a catastrophic collapse that saw the floodgates swing wide open, resulting in the loss of their final seven wickets for a mere 48 runs and once again exposing a middle-order vulnerability that even fresh personnel couldn't fix.
