Haiti will wear Poland's flag on their FIFA World Cup 2026 jersey. Here's why
Haiti are set to make their second appearance at the FIFA World Cup this year, but there seems to be a small tribute on the kit to Poland with the presence of their flag.

Haiti will be in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 52 years. The first time they competed was in 1974 where they got eliminated in the group stage after playing against Argentina, Poland and Italy. Now they will be coming back looking to make an impact on the tournament and bring some flair as well. But what has caught the eye of the fans is the presence of the Polish flag on their jersey.

When you look closely at the home and away jerseys of the Haiti team, Poland's white and red flag can be seen around the waist area. First of all, this is no glitch from the kit manufacturers and it is actually part of the design. And there's some historical significance to the presence of the flag in the jersey.
WHAT'S THE STORY?
The story dates back to 1802. At that time, Haiti was a French colony and a slave revolt was taking place as they were fighting for their freedom.
Around 5,000 Polish soldiers were sent by Napoleon to Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti) to assist French forces in suppressing a slave uprising at that time. Many of the Poles had aligned with Napoleon in the hope that France would help restore Poland's independence after the country had been partitioned by Prussia, Russia and Austria.
However, once they arrived in the Caribbean, the soldiers realised they were being used to crush a freedom movement led by enslaved Africans fighting against colonial rule. Sympathetic to the cause, a significant number of Polish troops switched sides and joined the Haitian revolutionaries in their battle against the French.
After Haiti secured independence in 1804, the country's founding leader, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, recognised the support provided by the Poles. Although Haiti's 1805 Constitution restricted citizenship and land ownership for white foreigners, Dessalines made a special exception for the Polish soldiers. Roughly 500 remained in Haiti and became part of the nation's fabric.
More than 220 years later, Haiti's kit for its first FIFA World Cup appearance in 52 years appears to feature a small Polish flag on the jersey. The design is widely seen as a tribute to the Polish soldiers who stood alongside Haitians during their fight for independence and chose to make Haiti their home.
It is interesting that Poland won't be playing this year's World Cup after failing to qualify. Haiti are in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Morocco.
