French Open 2026, Day 4 Order of Play: Djokovic, Basavareddy headline action-packed 2nd round clashes

Novak Djokovic meets Valentin Royer and Nishesh Basavareddy faces Alex Michelsen as Day 4 opens at Roland Garros. The schedule places a title chase and a breakthrough run side by side in Paris.

Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title and Nishesh Basavareddy’s dream French Open breakthrough will headline a packed Day 4 schedule at Roland Garros on Wednesday. With Iga Swiatek, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud and rising Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca also in action, Paris is set for another loaded day of second-round clashes.

Djokovic returns to Court Philippe-Chatrier after surviving a difficult opening-round test against French big-server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The 39-year-old dropped the first set before finding rhythm under the night-session lights, but this time the Serbian great will have to deal with a very different challenge.

The third seed faces another Frenchman in Valentin Royer, though the bigger battle may come from the Paris heat itself. Djokovic has been scheduled for the third match of the day on Chatrier, which means he could walk into the hottest conditions of the afternoon after matches involving Iga Swiatek and Elina Svitolina.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion would probably have preferred another night-session slot, but that honour has instead gone to Alexander Zverev’s clash against Tomas Machac.

Djokovic’s opening-round comeback once again showed why he remains one of the most dangerous players at Roland Garros despite approaching 40. Royer, ranked 74th in the world, will have the home crowd behind him, but beating Djokovic across five sets on Philippe-Chatrier remains one of the toughest tasks in tennis.

BASAVAREDDY LOOKS TO CONTINUE DREAM RUN

While Djokovic continues chasing history, one of the stories of the tournament so far belongs to Nishesh Basavareddy.

The 21-year-old American wildcard of Indian origin announced himself on one of tennis’ biggest stages after stunning seventh seed Taylor Fritz in four sets during the opening round. Ranked 148th in the world, Basavareddy produced the biggest win of his young career on his Roland Garros main-draw debut, winning 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

What made the performance stand out was not just the upset, but the composure.

Basavareddy repeatedly disrupted Fritz with disguised drop shots, changes in pace and fearless shot-making, leaving the higher-ranked American increasingly frustrated as the match progressed. By the fourth set, the Paris crowd had completely fallen for the underdog story, chanting “Nishesh! Nishesh!” after he closed out the win.

The victory also continued a breakthrough season for the former Stanford star, who had already pushed his idol Novak Djokovic during his Australian Open debut earlier this year.

Now, Basavareddy returns for a second-round all-American clash against Alex Michelsen on Court 13. It may not carry the glamour of the Djokovic or Swiatek matches, but after Sunday’s performance, the young Indian-origin American has suddenly become one of the must-watch stories of the tournament.

SWIATEK, ZVEREV FACE TRICKY TESTS

Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek continues her title defence against Czech youngster Sara Bejlek in the opening match on Philippe-Chatrier.

Swiatek breezed through her first-round clash against Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2 and once again looked extremely comfortable on Paris clay despite briefly needing treatment for a blister on her right hand. The Pole remains one of the strongest favourites in the women’s draw and will be expected to move through quickly again.

Later in the evening, Alexander Zverev headlines the night session against dangerous Czech Tomas Machac.

The German second seed started strongly against Benjamin Bonzi in the opening round and gradually grew into the match after a slightly slow beginning. But Machac represents a far tougher test. The Czech is one of the cleanest baseline hitters on tour and has the ability to trouble elite opponents when fully fit and confident.

Still, Zverev’s superior serve and comfort on clay make him the favourite heading into the contest.

PACED DAY AT ROLAND GARROS

Elsewhere, Casper Ruud faces Hamad Medjedovic on Court Suzanne Lenglen, while Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini and Andrey Rublev are also in action across the outside courts.

Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca, already one of the breakout names of the season, takes on Dino Prizmic on Court 14, while Tommy Paul faces Lorenzo Sonego in another interesting second-round battle.

But the spotlight on Day 4 will largely remain on two very different journeys.

One belongs to Djokovic, still chasing more Grand Slam history at 39.

The other belongs to Basavareddy, the Indian-origin wildcard suddenly becoming one of the stories of Roland Garros 2026.
