Devotees of Krishna from around the world come to Mathura-Vrindavan to participate in the Holi celebrations, popularly known as Mathura Holi.
Holi begins on the evening of the full moon in the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna, marking the arrival of spring, and continues for one night and one day. In the English calendar, the festival usually falls in the middle of March. The first evening is celebrated as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi, and the following day is commemorated as Holi. In different states of India, it is known by various names such as Dol Purnima, Dhuleti, Dhulandi, Ukuli, Manjal Kuli, Yaosang, Shigmo, and Phagwa.
Holi has gained popularity outside India as well. Apart from India and Nepal, the festival is rejoiced by the diaspora of the Indian subcontinent in countries like Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
