Born on November 24, 1982, in Manipur, Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, popularly known as MC Mary Kom or Magnificent Mary, is an Indian amateur boxer and a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.
Mary was born to Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom, who were tenant farmers. She has a younger sister and brother. She got married to footballer Karung Onkholer (Onler) in 2005 and the couple together has three sons. Her boxing career started in 2000 with a victory in the Manipur state women’s boxing championship and was only 18-year-old when she made her international debut at the first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship.
Mary Kom holds the record of being the only female to make a six times winning record of the World Amateur Boxing Championship and is the only female boxer to win a medal in each one of the seven World Championships.
To add to the victories and many firsts of her career, in the 2012 Olympics, she became the first female boxer to qualify and won a bronze medal in the 51 kg flyweight category of Boxing. She was also the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 and won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Mary Kom qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but was eliminated after she lost the women’s flyweight pre-quarters.
In 2018, the Manipur government conferred her with the title 'Meethoi Leima' for her exceptional performances. She has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Arjuna Award and many more.
