Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, military officer, and former member of Congress. On February 12, 2025, she was appointed Director of National Intelligence in the United States. Previously, she represented Hawaii in the U.S. House of Representatives between 2013 and 2021 and ran as a Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential election. Known as a progressive leader and independent thinker, Gabbard has carved out a unique identity in American politics.
Born on April 12, 1981, in American Samoa, Gabbard moved to Hawaii with her family during her childhood. She holds a degree in Business Administration from Hawai'i Pacific University.
At just 21, Gabbard made history as the youngest woman ever elected to the Hawaii State Legislature. She joined the U.S. Army National Guard in 2003 and served in the Iraq War from 2004 to 2005 as part of a medical unit.
Gabbard broke barriers by becoming the first Hindu and the first American Samoan to serve in Congress. Throughout her political career, she has been a vocal advocate for military reform, environmental conservation, healthcare improvements, and civil liberties.
In 2019, she announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, focusing her campaign on peace, reducing military intervention, and domestic policy reforms. However, lacking support from mainstream Democratic leaders, she withdrew from the race in 2020.
In 2022, Gabbard left the Democratic Party, declaring herself an Independent.
