Family faces backlash for enjoying snacks in train, but not everyone agrees

Sharing home-cooked meals during train journeys is a long-standing Indian tradition, but a recent viral video has reignited debate over how such practices should be carried out in shared spaces.

The clip, shared by Instagram user Suresh Parmar, shows his family members seated inside a train compartment, passing around disposable plates filled with snacks. In the video, the plates are placed directly on the seats as they eat, without any covering underneath, which drew immediate attention from viewers.

A section of users criticised the act, calling it unhygienic and inconsiderate in a shared public setting. Many pointed out that train seats are used by multiple passengers and placing food directly on them could create discomfort for others. Some also raised concerns about smell and cleanliness in a confined space like a train coach.

At the same time, others defended the family, arguing that carrying and consuming homemade food has always been a part of long train journeys in India. Several users noted that many passengers prefer home-cooked meals over railway catering due to concerns around quality and pricing.

The incident also reminded users of similar viral moments, including videos of families preparing sandwiches during journeys. In contrast, some pointed to instances where passengers ensured that plates and waste were collected and kept aside neatly for disposal.
