A travel video by a foreign content creator describing Meghalaya as a “scamming state” has gone viral on social media, but not for the reasons the title suggests.

Lewis Pullman, who documents his journeys on Instagram, shared a clip titled “North East India is full of scams,” recounting what he called the “three biggest scams” he experienced during his three-week stay in the state.

However, each instance turned out to be an example of unexpected generosity and hospitality.

In the video, Pullman said he had agreed to pay a trekking guide Rs 2,000 for a day-long hike. After spending around seven hours together, the guide invited him home for dinner. When Pullman later tried to pay, the guide refused to accept the money.

In another instance, he said he was picked up by a couple while hitchhiking. What began as a short ride turned into a three-day stay, during which the couple hosted him, offered him meals, and gave him a place to sleep.

The third “scam,” he joked, was that while hitchhiking, he never had to wait long as cars would stop almost immediately, leaving him with no time to even gather his thoughts.

“Meghalaya, you’re bloody unreal. I love it,” he said in the video.

In the caption, Pullman wrote that the state, which he knew little about before visiting, is now among his favourite places, praising it for offering “some of the best hospitality” he has experienced.
