Hyderabad woman shares how son's blunt question made her reflect on work-life balance

A simple question from her young son left a Hyderabad-based working mother reflecting on the challenges of balancing work, parenting and being emotionally present for a child who just wanted to spend time with her.

Lavanya Vaddanam, a working mother from Hyderabad who regularly shares parenting and life-related content on Instagram, recently posted a video recounting a conversation with her son that struck a chord with thousands of parents online.

In the video, Vaddanam recalled how her son approached her before leaving for school one morning with a special request. He asked if they could make a greeting card together when he returned home later that day. She agreed and headed to work while he went to school.

However, things did not go as planned.

According to Vaddanam, she got delayed at the office that evening. By the time she finished work, picked up her son from her parents' house and returned home, it was already quite late.

She noticed that her son seemed unusually quiet and upset.

When she asked him what was wrong, he responded with a question that caught her completely off guard.

"Mommy, what is more important to you, me or your office?"

Vaddanam said she was taken aback by the maturity of the question. She immediately reassured him that he was, without a doubt, more important to her than her job.

"He simply said 'okay mommy' and walked away," she recalled.

She explained that before her son went to sleep, she brought up the topic again and asked whether he really believed that he was not the most important person in her life. She also suggested that they could make the greeting card together the next morning instead.

Her son agreed, but the exchange prompted her to have a deeper conversation with him.

Vaddanam said she explained that there are times when work responsibilities cause delays and make it difficult to keep every promise exactly as planned. However, she wanted him to understand that those situations did not mean her job was more important than he was.

She wrote that although her son was unquestionably more important to her than her office, she found herself wondering why she had to explain that to him in the first place. "What I realised is that we should share our struggles and sacrifices with our children. Only then can they understand what we go through," she wrote, adding that children may otherwise struggle to fully understand their parents' intentions.

She concluded with a message that many parents found relatable: "At the end of the day, all they really need is our presence."
