Punjab cop shares how he refused to waive daughter's challan

A Punjab Police officer has been applauded after refusing to use his position to help his daughter avoid a traffic penalty.

Gurdev Singh, currently posted in Ludhiana, shared the anecdote during an address at Khalsa College, where he was speaking about traffic discipline among youngsters.

Recounting the incident, Singh said his daughter had called him after her car was towed for wrong parking. Expecting help, she asked him to intervene and get the vehicle released. However, the officer told her to follow due process instead.

“If you’ve made a mistake, you must pay the fine and get the car released as per the law,” he said, stressing that rules apply equally to everyone, including his own family.

He later explained that the example was deliberate. Singh said his intention was to send a message to young people about accountability, especially at a time when traffic violations are common.

“My purpose was to educate the younger generation. Traffic is a mess, and many youngsters don’t follow rules. I cited my daughter’s example to show she must face the consequences and pay the challan from her own pocket money,” he said.

The video of his speech has been circulated widely on Instagram and Punjabi media pages.

Many praised him for reinforcing the idea that no one is above the law and for setting a strong example both as a public servant and a parent.
