Tamil Nadu temple elephant goes viral for politely asking for a foot massage

Despite weighing several tonnes, Mangalam behaves less like a giant and more like an oversized baby in a viral video from Tamil Nadu. The temple elephant's adorable request for a foot massage has left social media users completely smitten.

The heartwarming clip was shared on Instagram by the account @lifewshroots and features Mangalam, a temple elephant at the Arulmigu Adi Kumbeswarar Temple in Kumbakonam. What begins as an ordinary moment between an elephant and its handler quickly turns into a touching display of trust, comfort and companionship.

In the video, Mangalam stands peacefully beside its caretaker in the temple premises. Decorated with a traditional tilak on its forehead and a garland of tiny bells around its neck, the elephant appears completely relaxed as the caretaker gently massages one of its feet.

Then comes the moment that has captivated social media users. As if understanding exactly what is happening, Mangalam slowly lifts one foot and extends it towards the caretaker. Moments later, it shifts its weight and offers the other foot as well, almost as though it is politely asking for equal attention.

The video's caption perfectly captured the mood: "Big elephant body, baby heart – Mangalam." Another playful note in the video described the elephant as "just a baby" making a very polite request for a foot massage.

The clip has since amassed more than 1.5 million views, with viewers charmed by the elephant's seemingly childlike behaviour. Many praised the beautiful bond between Mangalam and its caretaker, noting how comfortable and trusting the animal appeared in his presence.
