A 911 dispatcher in Iowa, US, has been honoured after helping a woman give birth on the side of Highway 18 near Dickens, calmly guiding the family through the emergency over the phone.

Andrea Ring, a dispatcher with 26 years of experience and a mother of five, is being recognised for her calm actions during a childbirth emergency that unfolded on March 5 along Highway 18 near Dickens, Iowa.

According to local reports, Ring was just 23 minutes into her shift when she received a frantic call from a man whose girlfriend had gone into labour while they were travelling. It quickly became clear that the couple would not make it to the hospital in time.

As the situation intensified, Ring stayed on the line, calmly talking the family through the delivery while emergency responders rushed to the scene.

By the time crews arrived, the baby had already been born safely on the side of the highway.

In a Facebook post announcing her recognition, local authorities and emergency responders surprised Ring with a "Stork Pin" — an honour traditionally awarded in emergency medical services to those who assist during childbirth emergencies.

The post praised Ring's role in the dramatic delivery, noting that she "calmly guided and supported the family over the phone" as the mother gave birth before first responders could arrive.

What made the achievement even more remarkable was the fact that dispatchers reportedly do not receive formal instructions for handling emergency childbirth situations.

According to Dispatch Supervisor Mel Peterson, "We have no instructions for handling emergency childbirths; this was ALL Andrea, who has birthed five children of her own."

Following the successful delivery, both mother and baby were transported safely to the hospital, where medical staff welcomed them upon arrival.

The story took an even more emotional turn when the baby's mother, Brianna Ziegler, responded to the Facebook post herself.

"Thank you Andrea!! I am the momma of 'highway 18 baby'," she wrote, adding that Ring's "calm voice and expert knowledge was exactly what we needed in that moment."

The recognition has shone a spotlight on dispatchers, who are often the unseen first link in emergency response. As the hospital noted in its tribute, they work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without ever learning how the stories they help shape eventually end.

For Andrea Ring, however, this was one ending she will never forget — helping bring a new life safely into the world from miles away.
