A woman’s viral video praising Hyderabad’s safety after a solo night walk has sparked debate online, with users divided over how safe the city really is.

Leesha, who recently moved to Hyderabad for work, posted a video on Instagram describing her experience of walking home alone around 11 pm. In the clip, she says the four-kilometre walk felt comfortable and uneventful, not in a dull way, but in the sense that nothing went wrong. There was no catcalling, no unwanted attention, and no moment that made her feel unsafe.

What makes her account stand out is the contrast she draws with her earlier expectations. She admits that Mumbai had always been her dream city, the place she imagined settling down in. Hyderabad, on the other hand, was not even on her list. She says she had perceived it as “old” and less appealing. But living there changed that impression entirely.

In her video, she describes Hyderabad as not just safe, but also visually pleasing, with calm streets and relatively pleasant nights, even if the afternoons tend to be harsh. She also points to the city’s infrastructure and the politeness of its people as factors that added to her sense of comfort.

Her post quickly gained traction, with many users echoing her experience and praising Hyderabad as a relatively safe urban space, especially for women.

At the same time, others were quick to push back, sharing personal accounts that painted a more cautious picture and reminding viewers that safety can vary depending on area, time, and individual experience.

Many commented that several parts of the old city of Hyderabad are still unsafe for women.

While Leesha’s experience highlights a reassuring side of Hyderabad, the mixed reactions to her video underline a larger truth, safety is not a one-size-fits-all reality. It often depends on time, place, and personal experience, making such conversations both necessary and ongoing.
