A 22-year-old woman from Gujarat’s Anand district was stabbed to death in Canada’s Niagara region in a disturbing incident that has left her family and hometown in grief. The victim, identified as Vidhi Megha from Borsad town, had been living in Canada for the past four years while pursuing higher studies.

Police said the young woman was attacked in broad daylight and sustained fatal stab injuries. Local residents rushed her to a nearby hospital following the incident, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

According to authorities, Vidhi was studying law and was also working part-time to support herself. She had reportedly been preparing to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. The attack took place on May 15 after she left her residence in the Niagara area.

Initial reports suggest that the attacker may have targeted her during an attempted robbery. Authorities have since arrested one suspect in connection with the case and launched a detailed investigation.

However, officials have not yet disclosed the exact motive behind the killing.

Vidhi’s family in Borsad remained unaware of the tragedy for several days. Relatives said they had been unable to contact her since May 16 and initially believed she was away or occupied with work and studies.

The family was informed about her death only after officials and police contacted them with details received through diplomatic channels.

The news of her murder has sent shockwaves across Borsad and nearby areas, with residents expressing grief and concern over the safety of Indian students living abroad. Friends and acquaintances described Vidhi as hardworking and ambitious, focused on building a future in Canada.

The incident has also renewed concerns about attacks on Indians and international students overseas.

In recent years, several cases involving assaults, robberies and violent crimes against Indian-origin residents and students have been reported from different countries.

Canadian police continue to investigate the case and are questioning the arrested suspect. Authorities are expected to release more information once the inquiry progresses. Meanwhile, Vidhi’s family is awaiting further updates and arrangements regarding the repatriation of her body.

The tragic killing has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by students living far from home in search of education and better opportunities abroad.

The latest incident of an attack on an Indian national in Canada comes just two months after a student from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain died after suffering severe injuries in an alleged assault in British Columbia’s Fort St John.

The victim, Gurkirat Singh Manocha, had moved to Canada around 15 months ago. His family claimed he was attacked by a group of 10 to 12 people while returning from work over an old dispute and was later run over by a vehicle.

Police responded to reports of a late-night altercation near the Charlie Lake boat ramp on March 13 and found Manocha critically injured.

He was taken to hospital by friends but later succumbed. Canada’s RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, though there were no immediate arrests made in the incident.
