Watch: Baltimore bridge collapse timeline before ship collision

On March 26, 2024, at approximately 1.26 am, the Dali, a large 948-foot-long container ship operated by Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., left port from Baltimore Harbor, embarking on a month-long journey to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

However, minutes before 1.30 am, the ship experienced a significant issue when its power failed, rendering it unable to maintain control or avoid obstacles. As a result, the vessel drifted towards a support pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, carrying Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland, and spanning the Patapsco River.

At 1.28 am, the ship, moving at around 9 miles per hour, collided with the bridge's support pillar, promptly triggering the structure's collapse into the river below. This unfortunate event led to the plunge of construction workers and vehicles traversing the bridge into the Patapsco River. In anticipation of the impending catastrophe, the ship's crew issued a mayday call at 1.26 am, enabling law enforcement to prevent additional vehicles from entering the bridge prior to its collapse.
