Maruti Suzuki surges ahead in April, Tata, Mahindra locked in close duel
India's PV market opened FY27 strongly as Maruti Suzuki India widened its lead with record April sales, while Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra remained locked in a tight battle for second place.

India’s passenger vehicle market began FY27 on a strong note in April, with Maruti Suzuki India extending its dominance at the top and widening the gap to rivals through record-breaking volumes. The month also highlighted an increasingly competitive battle for the second spot, with Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra continuing their close contest, while Hyundai Motor India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Kia India maintained their positions in the mid-tier.
Maruti Suzuki
At the top of the chart, Maruti Suzuki reported its highest-ever monthly domestic sales at 1,87,704 units in April 2026. The automaker’s sustained leadership was driven by a well-balanced portfolio spanning hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs. The company’s utility vehicle portfolio continued to be a key growth engine, with sales rising to 77,892 units compared to 59,022 units in the same month last year. This segment comprises models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny and Victoris. The compact and mid-size passenger car category also delivered strong performance, with combined sales of models like the Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR increasing to 80,659 units in April 2026, up from 61,912 units a year earlier. Entry-level offerings, including the Alto and S-Presso, saw a sharp rise in volumes, reaching 16,066 units versus 6,332 units in April 2025. Meanwhile, van sales, primarily driven by the Eeco—grew to 13,087 units from 11,438 units. Sales of the Super Carry light commercial vehicle stood at 3,418 units, slightly higher than the 3,349 units recorded in the corresponding period last year.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors retained its second position, posting domestic passenger vehicle sales of around 59,000 units, marking a 30.5 percent year-on-year growth. The company’s performance continued to be anchored by strong demand for key products like the Nexon and Punch. Notably, Tata’s electric vehicle portfolio remained a major growth driver, with EV volumes surging 72.1 percent compared to the same period last year.
Mahindra
Mahindra followed closely in third place with 56,331 units, registering an 8 percent year-on-year increase. However, volumes declined sequentially compared to March, reflecting some moderation in demand. The brand’s SUV-heavy lineup—including the Scorpio, Thar and XUV range—continued to underpin its overall performance, keeping it within striking distance of Tata Motors.
Hyundai
Hyundai held on to the fourth spot with domestic sales of 51,902 units. The company’s volumes were led by its core SUV portfolio, including the Creta, Venue and Exter, alongside consistent demand for hatchbacks such as the Grand i10 Nios and i20. The Venue emerged as a standout performer, achieving its highest-ever monthly domestic sales of 12,420 units, aided in part by its recent five-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.
Toyota
Toyota secured the fifth position with 30,159 units, reflecting a robust 21 percent year-on-year growth. Demand remained strong for models such as the Innova HyCross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner. During the month, the Innova HyCross crossed a cumulative sales milestone of 2 lakh units, underscoring its popularity. Toyota also signaled its future strategy by unveiling the Urban Cruiser EBella, its first electric vehicle for India, with pricing details expected in the near term.
Overall, April 2026 reinforced Maruti Suzuki’s commanding lead, while the competition below intensified, particularly between Tata Motors and Mahindra. With rising EV adoption and continued SUV demand shaping the market, the coming months are likely to see even sharper rivalry across segments.
