17 lakh exam takers, more than 11 lakh copy requests: What is happening at CBSE?

The CBSE Class 12 results may have been declared weeks ago, but the post-result process is now facing scrutiny of its own. Nearly one in four students has sought scanned copies of evaluated answer books, pushing requests past 11.3 lakh answer scripts and putting the board’s evaluation system under the spotlight.

The surge comes as CBSE’s new On-Screen Marking (OSM) mechanism faces growing scrutiny, with students flagging alleged wrong marking, blurred scanned copies, portal issues and discrepancies in evaluated scripts, turning the re-evaluation process into a fresh challenge for the board.

CBSE has issued fresh data on scanned answer book requests amid ongoing scrutiny of the post-result process. In its May 26 update, the board said access to evaluated answer books is being provided through the designated portal and registered email IDs.

CBSE said 4,04,319 students applied for scanned copies of their evaluated answer books, covering 11,31,961 answer scripts across subjects. Of these, 8,98,214 answer books have already been shared digitally with candidates, while the remaining requests are expected to be completed by May 27, 2026.

WHEN WILL THE RE-EVALUATION AND VERIFICATION PORTAL OPEN?

The board has announced that the portal for verification of marks and re-evaluation of answer books is expected to go live on May 29, 2026.

This will mark the next stage in the post-result process, allowing students to seek verification and challenge discrepancies, if any, after reviewing their evaluated scripts.

HOW DID THE CBSE RESULT CONTROVERSY BEGIN?

The controversy gained momentum after CBSE declared the Class 12 Result 2026 on May 13, which recorded an overall pass percentage lower by around three percentage points compared to last year and marked the rollout of the board’s new On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation system.

The issue escalated after Class 12 student Vedant Srivastava alleged that the Physics answer sheet uploaded by CBSE under the new system did not belong to him, raising concerns over possible evaluation errors and their potential impact on marks and college admissions.

On May 23, Vedant shared a series of posts on X, saying he was left “shattered” after receiving photocopies of his evaluated answer sheets and discovering that the Physics script shared by CBSE appeared to belong to another student.

The claims intensified scrutiny around the OSM rollout and triggered wider discussions among students over discrepancies and transparency in the post-result process.

WHAT HAS CBSE SAID ABOUT SECURITY AND OSM CONCERNS?

Amid concerns over the evaluation system and reports of a possible breach, CBSE recently clarified that its evaluation portal had not been compromised. The board stated that the targeted website contained only test data and rejected claims of a security breach affecting the evaluation ecosystem.

The clarification came as discussions about OSM and result discrepancies gained traction.

The numbers reveal the unprecedented scale of CBSE’s post-result exercise: over 11 lakh answer books requested from just over 4 lakh applications.

As the board races to clear pending requests and prepare for re-evaluation, the coming days could prove crucial in restoring confidence around the new OSM-based assessment process.

For lakhs of students awaiting clarity, the focus now shifts to May 29, when the re-evaluation window officially opens.
