Annamalai unhappy over BJP-AIADMK seat division, may not contest in protest
Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has expressed strong displeasure over the BJP-AIADMK seat-sharing deal, flagging concerns over the allocation of constituencies.
Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has expressed strong displeasure over the seat-sharing arrangement between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) ahead of the polls, sources said.
According to sources, Annamalai has written to the party’s central leadership in Delhi, flagging concerns over the constituencies allocated to the BJP as part of the alliance deal. He is reportedly unhappy that constituencies considered favourable for an easy win for the BJP, including Kinathukadavu, were not shared by the AIADMK.
Sources further indicated that Annamalai has informed party leadership that he will not contest the Tamil Nadu polls.
The discontent has also percolated down to party workers. BJP cadres staged a protest in Kinathukadavu on Thursday, expressing anger over the seat-sharing arrangement. India Today had earlier reported unease within the BJP ecosystem over the distribution of constituencies in the alliance with the AIADMK.
The NDA finalised its seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, with the AIADMK set to contest 169 seats and the BJP 27 out of the total 234 constituencies. The other alliance partners have also been allocated seats, with PMK getting 18 and AMMK 11.
BJP Tamil Nadu in-charge and Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that the people of Tamil Nadu will reject the DMK-Congress combine in the ensuing Assembly elections, just as voters in Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar and Delhi rejected the INDIA bloc.
“We will launch the fight against the evil force DMK and its partners who have taken Tamil Nadu to extremely difficult times due to their incompetent management of the economy and actions that hurt Tamil culture. People are fed up with the DMK and Congress,” he said.
Elections to the 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase on April 23, while neighbouring Puducherry will go to polls for its 30 seats on April 9.
