The year 2026 is extremely significant for IndiaтАЩs electoral politics. Assembly elections are scheduled to be held this year in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The Election Commission announced the detailed election schedule on Sunday, March 15. According to the schedule, the first phase of voting will take place on April 9, while the final phase of polling will be held on April 29. The counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on May 4.
Polling in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29.
Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23.
Assam will have single-phase polling on April 9.
Kerala will also vote in a single phase on April 9.
Puducherry will vote in a single phase on April 9.
In West Bengal, a tough contest is expected between the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 294 assembly seats. In Kerala, the contest will be between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), while in Assam the BJP will attempt to retain power. In Tamil Nadu, the contest among the DMK, AIADMK and other regional parties is expected to be highly competitive. In the Union Territory of Puducherry as well, the contest will largely revolve around local issues and political alliances.
