Nandigram Assembly Election 2026
Nandigram Assembly Constituency

Nandigram, a general category Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, is one of the seven segments under the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat. The constituency comprises the Nandigram I and Nandigram II community development blocks and was formed in 1967 following the merger of the erstwhile Nandigram North and South constituencies that existed between 1951 and 1967.

The name Nandigram evokes memories of a political turning point in Bengal’s history. The agitation against land acquisition for a proposed chemical hub under the Left Front government in 2007, which led to the death of 14 villagers, became a rallying point for Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress. The agitation not only galvanised public sentiment but also catapulted Banerjee to the centre stage of Bengal politics, eventually leading to the fall of the Left Front government in 2011 after 34 years of uninterrupted rule.

The constituency once again grabbed national headlines in 2021 when Mamata Banerjee chose to contest from Nandigram, leaving her traditional Bhabanipur seat, in a bid to challenge her former aide Suvendu Adhikari, who had defected to the BJP. In a dramatic and closely fought contest, Banerjee lost to Adhikari by a slender margin of 1,956 votes. The BJP further strengthened its position in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, leading the Nandigram segment by 8,200 votes over the Trinamool Congress.

Electorally, Nandigram has seen 15 Assembly elections, including a by-election in 2009. The Communist Party of India (CPI) dominated the early decades, winning the seat nine times. The Congress party and Trinamool Congress have each won twice, while the Janata Party registered a solitary victory. The BJP’s 2021 win marked its debut in the constituency.

In terms of voter demographics, Nandigram had 257,992 registered voters in the 2021 Assembly elections, up from 246,434 in 2019 and 231,866 in 2016. Muslim voters make up around 23.60 per cent of the electorate, while Scheduled Castes account for 16.46 per cent. The constituency is overwhelmingly rural, with only 3.35 per cent of voters classified as urban. Voter turnout has consistently been high, peaking at 88.51 per cent in 2021, up from 86.97 per cent in 2016.

Geographically, Nandigram lies on the southern bank of the Haldi River, opposite the industrial town of Haldia. The terrain is flat and fertile, enriched by the Haldi and Bhagirathi rivers that flank the region. The soil supports a thriving agricultural economy, with rice, vegetables, and fish forming the backbone of local livelihoods. Nandigram supplies fresh produce to nearby urban centres, particularly Haldia. Despite its strategic location, industrial development remains limited, and the area continues to rely heavily on farming and small-scale trade.

Infrastructure in Nandigram is modest, with road connectivity to Haldia and Tamluk. The nearest railway station is located in Mahishadal, about 19 km away. Educational institutions include several government schools and colleges, though higher education and specialised healthcare facilities are largely accessed in Haldia or Tamluk.

Nandigram is located approximately 70 km south-west of Kolkata, the state capital, and about 33 km from Tamluk, the district headquarters of Purba Medinipur. Nearby towns include Haldia (13 km), Mahishadal (19 km), and Egra (48 km). The constituency also shares proximity with the South 24 Parganas district across the river.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the BJP may have reason to feel confident, but the narrow margins in both the 2021 and 2024 contests suggest that the seat remains highly competitive. The Trinamool Congress is expected to mount a strong challenge, and the possibility of Mamata Banerjee returning to contest from Nandigram adds a layer of intrigue. Should she decide to stay away, Suvendu Adhikari might find the path to re-election less turbulent. The Left Front-Congress alliance, though likely to field a candidate, remains a peripheral force in the constituency’s current political scenario.

Why Mamata lost her safe seat Bhabanipur to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, the safe seat that sent the Trinamool Congress chief to the Assembly as the chief minister. The loss adds insult to injury even as the BJP decimated the TMC in the West Bengal Assembly election. These are the factors behind Mamata's loss in Bhabanipur.

How BJP is trying to trap Mamata in Bhabanipur Chakravyuh

The BJP has crafted a strategy to corner Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her Bhabanipur stronghold by fielding West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari from the high-profile south Kolkata seat. The move has turned Bhabanipur into a Chakravyuh for Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.

EC replaces observer in Nandigram amid bias allegations ahead of polls

Hitesh Choudhury, who previously served as the police observer for Nandigram, has been replaced by Akhilesh Singh, a former CBI official based in Kolkata and currently the Inspector General in Assam. This change follows allegations of bias levelled against the Officer-in-Charge of the Nandigram Police Station by the Trinamool Congress.
