At least 10 people were killed and around 25-30 others injured in a horrific road accident in Katihar district on April 11, 2026.

The accident took place near Gerabari when a pickup vehicle collided head-on with a bus on National Highway 31, near the Korha-Phulwaria Basgadha stretch.

According to police, all the victims were members of the tribal community and were returning to their homes from Jharkhand. The deceased include both men and women. The pickup vehicle bore the brunt of the collision, leading to the deaths of all 10 occupants.

In an official statement, Katihar Police said, “Today, on April 11, 2026, a horrific road accident occurred near Gerabari within the jurisdiction of the Korha Police Station in Katihar District involving a bus and a pickup vehicle. 10 individuals have lost their lives in this incident so far. Approximately 25 individuals injured in the accident are being transferred to nearby hospitals for advanced medical care following the administration of first aid.”

The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment after initial medical assistance. Authorities are continuing further investigation into the incident.

Reacting to the incident, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the mishap in Katihar is “extremely painful” and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. It also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Nitish Kumar also termed the incident tragic and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the dependents of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He added that senior officials have reached the spot and have been directed to ensure proper treatment of the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery.
