Under-construction tunnel collapses in Uttarakhand, 36 feared trapped

At least 36 people are feared trapped after a part of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. The tunnel was being constructed from Silkyara to Dandalgaon and the tunnel broke about 200 meters ahead of the starting point, said Uttarkashi SP Arpan Yaduvanshi.

"According to the officials of HIDCL, which is looking after the construction work of the tunnel, about 36 people are trapped in the tunnel and efforts are being made to rescue them safely," the official added.

No casualties have been reported so far, police said.

The National and State Disaster Response Fund (NDRF and SDRF) teams and police personnel have been rushed to the spot, and rescue operations are currently underway.
