A severe heatwave is currently sweeping across large parts of India, with the heatwave belt covering the entire North India region, parts of West and Central India, and isolated pockets in the east. Regions like Vidarbha in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Delhi are experiencing active heat stress. The rising temperatures, categorised as a severe heatwave when crossing forty-seven degrees, are attributed to rapid urbanisation, increased use of air conditioners, and vehicular emissions. This extreme weather poses significant health risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heatstrokes, while also causing power demand spikes, water shortages, and environmental stress. To stay safe, it is advised to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours and maintain hydration by consuming water with electrolytes. Eating water-rich fruits like watermelons and muskmelons is also recommended. Individuals with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and hypertension must take extra precautions to prevent severe dehydration during this period.
