Tara Sutaria's Cannes debut look feels straight out of a Sophia Loren film

Tara Sutaria made her Cannes arrival in a black-and-white Helsa Studio midi dress. The look relied on old-Hollywood restraint, pairing retro beauty with classic glamour.

Tara Sutaria has officially arrived at the French Riviera, and her first look is giving vintage.

There’s something unmistakably old-Hollywood about the actor's Cannes look here. Not in a costume-y way, but in the kind of polished glamour that instantly brings to mind Sophia Loren's styling, Audrey Hepburn-era silhouettes, the elegance of Grace Kelly, and even a touch of the black-and-white ballroom dressing.

The actor stepped out in a striking black-and-white midi dress by Helsa Studio. The strapless silhouette featured a stylish sweetheart neckline with sharp white detailing that contrasted beautifully against the black bodice. The delicate lace detailing layered with crisp poplin accents simply elevated the attire.

Fitted at the waist before flowing into a voluminous midi skirt, the gown carried an elegant, feminine feel and was truly made for a grand staircase moment.

For makeup, the actor stayed committed to the old-Hollywood mood. Her softly curled, side-parted hair, fluttery lashes, and nude glam makeup brought back echoes of retro screen. The statement gold pearl-drop earrings added just the right amount of drama without competing with the gown.

If you look at it closely, with her upcoming film Toxic gearing up for a global release in 2026, this Cannes appearance feels less like a debut and more like a natural step into the international spotlight — especially with the vintage-inspired glamour that almost mirrors the aesthetic she may be seen carrying in the film too.

In fact, she kicked off her Cannes journey serving pure “90s supermodel energy” in a striped boyfriend blazer paired with super-baggy trousers and a white georgette cape top underneath, all by the same label. She completed the look with a mini Dior bag, a sleek bun, and black sunglasses.

This debut also marks a milestone in her career, as she will be honoured at the Women in Cinema Gala hosted by the Red Sea Film Foundation. The event will take place at Hotel du Cap during the Cannes Film Festival.

The gala honours women across cinema — from filmmakers and actors to writers, creators, and industry executives — recognising their growing influence on the global entertainment landscape.

Alongside Sutaria, this year’s honourees include Moroccan filmmaker Lala Marrakchi, Nigerian actor-producer Genevieve Nnaji, Rwandan filmmaker Marie-Clementine Dusabejambo, Indonesian director Kamila Andini, and Saudi actor-writer Aixa Kay.

The international film festival is witnessing a strong Indian representation this year.

Alia Bhatt attended the screening of La Vie D'Une Femme dressed in a dreamy steel blue outfit. Earlier in the day, for the Bharat Pavillion appearance alongside filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar, she brought her desi girl charm in an ivory corset saree.

Meanwhile, on the inaugural day, she opted for a Tamara Ralph peach gown with a dupatta (and not a scarf). As for her first look in Cannes, she paid homage to the French Riviera and how!

Karan Johar, Mouni Roy, and Ammy Virk are also expected to attend the film festival that began on May 12 and will conclude on May 23.
