Actor Vidya Balan remembered her late co-star Irrfan after she watched The Last Tenant for the first time since shooting it 25 years ago. The film, which also features Irrfan, is now streaming on YouTube and was released in memory of the late actor, who died in 2020.

On Thursday, Vidya shared clips from the film on Instagram and wrote about her emotional reaction to finally seeing it. She said it was a project she had once wanted to forget, as it belonged to a difficult phase in her early career when several films did not work out.

Vidya wrote, "Watched The Last Tenant for the first time last night, since I shot for it 25 years ago. I shot for it and then, for some reason, it didn’t see the light of day (sic)."

She then recalled the period in which the film was made and added, "This happened at a time when nothing I touched seemed to materialise. My first Malayalam film, Chakram, was shelved, following which I was replaced in almost a dozen films over a period of three years. To cut a long story short, like all the other things that didn’t work out at the time, I wanted to forget about it so I did (sic)."

Vidya said director Sarthak Dasgupta recently told her about the film’s release, which brought back memories of working with Irrfan. "I remembered calling my sister excitedly from the set to tell her that I was shooting with Irrfan Khan from Banegi Apni Baat. I thought he was the most natural actor then, and I felt the same way last night, never a false note or tone (sic)," the actor went on.

She also wrote about regretting that she did not get another chance to work opposite Irrfan. "Since Irrfan’s passing, I have rued the fact that a couple of films that would’ve had us play opposite each other didn’t materialise. But now I at least have The Last Tenant (sic)," Vidya added.

Actor Divya Dutta commented, "Awww.watching you two amazing actors weave magic tonight (sic)." A fan wrote, "Irrfan Khan was not just a wonderful actor but also a good human being. Alas! He left the world too early (sic)."

The Last Tenant, starring Irrfan and Vidya Balan, was released on YouTube on April 29 to mark the actor’s sixth death anniversary. Completed in 2000, the film premiered on The Salt Inc's YouTube page.

Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta and produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta, the film captures a young Irrfan alongside Vidya.

On the work front, Vidya was recently seen in the historical drama, Raja Shivaji, directed by Riteish Deshmukh, who played the titular role in the film.
