IPL Play of The Day: Parag's plan and Archer-Tushar twin act stuns Ahmedabad

IPL 2026, GT vs RR: Riyan Parag's bold call to back Jofra Archer and Tushar Deshpande paid off as Rajasthan Royals held their nerve to defend 11 in the final over and seal a tense win over Gujarat Titans.

For a brief moment, it felt like the Rajasthan Royals had let the game slip.

Having set a target of 211, they seemed in control, only for Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada to turn the tide with a late surge. Scoring at a strike rate touching 200, the pair brought Gujarat Titans right back into the contest, leaving them needing just 15 off the last 12 balls. The chase had tilted, momentum had shifted, and pressure sat firmly on the fielding side.

For a team that has struggled to close out tight games, this felt familiar. Another one slipping away. What followed, however, was not a moment of sudden inspiration but a sequence of calls that gradually tilted the game back in their favour.

PARAG’S CALCULATED GAMBLE

At the centre of it was the captain Riyan Parag, whose decision-making under immense pressure proved decisive. Parag had initially planned to go with Tushar Deshpande for the penultimate over, only to change his mind at the last moment and hand the ball to Jofra Archer instead. Mind you, he had options like Sandeep Sharma who has delivered at the death for the franchise before, in addition to Nandre Burger who has been in good touch of late.

It was far from the obvious call. Archer had been expensive earlier in the evening, while Deshpande had arguably been the more effective option.

Parag, though, chose to trust instinct and intent over caution.

“It was just incredible. I think I took a chance thinking, let’s just go full and fast. And the way the boys delivered I was so excited. The fact that they executed what they wanted is insane,” Parag said after the game.

The decision was not made in isolation either. There was clarity within the group and, crucially, trust in the inputs coming from the middle.

“I was actually going to switch up the order, so credit to Dhruv Jurel for that. He asked me to go with Jofra on the 19th,” Parag revealed.

ARCHER SHIFTS THE MOMENTUM

Archer’s role, once handed the ball, was clearly defined. He relied on pace, attacked the body, and ensured there was little room on offer.

The intent was not necessarily to take wickets but to deny boundaries and leave the equation as steep as possible for the final over.

“Whoever bowls the 19th, his responsibility was to leave as much as for the guy bowling the last over,” Archer explained in the post-match interview.

By the end of the over, what had looked like a manageable equation had turned into one that could swing either way.

DESHPANDE CLOSES IT OUT

That clarity left Deshpande with 11 runs to defend in the final over, a situation that can unravel quickly under pressure.

But Deshpande kept things straightforward. He attacked the stumps, backed his yorkers, and stayed away from offering width. There was no overthinking, and more importantly, no straying from the plan when it mattered most.

Rashid looked to improvise, Rabada tried to force the pace, but neither could find the boundary when it mattered. A mistimed shot found Archer in the deep. By the time the final delivery was bowled, the equation had slipped beyond Gujarat Titans’ reach, and Rajasthan Royals had pulled off a six-run win that, moments earlier, had seemed unlikely.

WHY DESHPANDE AT THE END?

As Sanjay Bangar pointed out, the decision itself was never straightforward, given the options at Parag’s disposal.

“Tushar Deshpande is somebody who has proven to be a good death bowler. He has done that for the Chennai Super Kings in the past. He has excellent control over the yorker as well, so it would have been a difficult decision because you have to consider how Sandeep Sharma has done the job for them, and the role Nandre Burger has played, more so with the new ball and through the middle overs,” Bangar shared on Star Sports.

“Sandeep had an off night, so the decision on the day came down to who was more confident. Tushar Deshpande seemed like the right choice. And when he ensured that Jofra bowled the 19th over, it provided enough runs for him to defend,” he added.

In the end, there was no single defining moment, but rather a series of small, calculated calls that came together. On a night where the margin for error was minimal, the Rajasthan Royals got just enough right when it mattered most.
